Mission Statement

We aim to make yoga, meditation & breathwork equitable & accessible in order to improve the mental & physical health of all communities.

About This Cause

In January 2015, while in a dark troubled place mentally and spiritually, which St. John of the Cross would call the Dark Night of the Soul, Steven felt the need to “do something different”. After listening to Russell Simmons discuss the need for everyone to practice yoga and meditation and to embrace a vegan lifestyle, Steven said, “ok - let me try this.” As Steven found peace on the yoga mat, he realized that often, he didn’t see anyone who looked like him. As a result, he felt convinced that yoga, meditation, and breathwork should be accessible to everyone. Little did he know that the conviction would move him to officially launch Yoga 4 Philly, now known as Yoga 4 The World, on April 23rd, 2019. As a result of this vision, and the forming of the non-profit, Yoga 4 Philly and Yoga 4 The World kids, school administrators, seniors, adults of all ages, individuals in group homes, communities that have been impacted by poverty, drug abuse, and sex trafficking have been empowered to take control of their own self-health tools and have found peace through yoga & meditation! Within the short six years, having provided a yoga experience to over 10,000 individuals, Yoga 4 Philly has been bridging the gap. Yoga 4 Philly exists to make yoga and meditation accessible to everyone in Philadelphia. From the humble beginnings of having one teacher staff person to over 30 teachers and support staff; from offering one donation-based yoga class in 2019 in Lovett Park in Mt Airy, Philadelphia, we now offer the following services: Yoga 4 Kids: invests in the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of students so that they will be equipped and empowered to be mindful people in the world. We provide trauma-informed yoga and meditation classes within a social-emotional framework to students and restorative yoga classes to teachers and staff. Yoga 4 Seniors: We partner with four local senior residential centers to provide yoga and meditation classes to seniors. Prenatal Yoga: We partner with the City of Philadelphia, local women’s health organizations, and doulas to fill the void of mindfulness accessibility for women of color during their prenatal and postnatal journey. We offer weekly yoga classes serving, on average, 20 women. Healing Kensington: We partner with local residents, local organizations, and the City of Philadelphia to make recovery-based yoga accessible in Kensington. We provide trauma-informed yoga classes to individuals impacted by poverty, drug abuse, and sex trafficking. Yoga 4 Parkinson’s Disease: To partner with local and national organizations to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease in historically underserved communities and provide yoga classes to individuals with Parkinson’s disease so that individuals can live better lives. Community Yoga Classes: Our dream is to host donation-based yoga and meditation classes year-round and all throughout the beautiful city of Philadelphia! To date, we have been in Northwest Philly (Mt. Airy), South Philly (Friends of Stephen Girard Park), Bucks County (Neshaminy State Park), and West Philly (Cobbs Creek Park).
