Mission Statement
In Place of War USA is a global organization that uses creativity in places of conflict as a tool for positive change. We enable grassroots change-makers in music, theater and across the arts to transform a culture of violence and suffering into hope, opportunity and freedom.
About This Cause
The arts can provide an inspirational alternative to violence and an opportunity for the voiceless to express themselves. Music, theatre and the arts can be a form of resistance, an act of defiance or a simple bridge of reconciliation. Creativity across the arts gives individuals and communities the opportunity to transcend their limitations and see potential in themselves and the world around them. Founded in 2004 at the University of Manchester as a project to conduct academic research around the role of arts in places of conflict, we now work in 25 countries with a network of 84 changemakers who use our toolkit, based on 15 years of experience and research to deliver cultural spaces, education & entrepreneurship and artistic collaborations. We have received significant funding and support from organizations including: The Linbury Trust, Arts Council England, Ronnie Scott’s Charitable Foundation, Mastercard Foundation, British Council, Mark Leonard Trust, The Anna Lindh Foundation, The Leverhulme Trust and the Arts & Humanities Research Council – and have always committed that this funding goes directly to our beneficiary projects, with our core being funded through charitable gifts and other support. Our organization is extraordinarily efficient. At core, it costs us just $2.38 to reach each beneficiary in-field, and for every $1 donated, we create almost $14 of social impact.
