Mission Statement
Travellers Rest Farm Sanctuary is a 100% volunteer-run Maryland-based 501(c)(3) IRS- certified (EIN 83-4531103) nonprofit. Our mission is to provide permanent sanctuary for senior, blind, disabled, unwanted, physically or psychologically abused/challenged, neglected, abandoned, and slaughter-bound horses, and to offer related education to individuals/groups.
About This Cause
Travellers Rest Farm Sanctuary just celebrated our 20th anniversary. We are a 34-acre farm in Maryland established specially to offer lifetime sanctuary to horses (and other farm animals. It was named for our beloved horse Traveller who was retired and buried there. We take in horses of all breeds, from all backgrounds with a range of physical and psychological issues. Every horse is treated like our own. We live right on the property, and provide their care. We have no paid staff and only two full time volunteers caring for our 50 equine residents. They are fed unlimited hay, grained daily, given dry shelter and warm blankets, and most importantly, they are loved and treated with respect. All our horses are kept in small groups so there is no over-crowding or competition for food. They form life-long bonds and remain with us until they pass. We firmly believe that every horse has a purpose, no matter its limitations, and none deserves an uncertain fate in their golden years. We take in as many senior, blind, disabled, unwanted, and slaughter-bound horses as we can. They are all retired, live in small groups, and spend their days eating us out of house and home. When they pass, we bury them here.
