About This Cause

ORGANIZATION BACKGROUND: Sewall Child Development Center has a rich history of providing high-quality services to children in the Denver Metro area. Established in 1944, Sewall began as an organization providing services to people with disabilities, evolving to focus its services on early childhood education, intervention, and inclusion. With 75 years of experience, Sewall has built a strong reputation for providing high-quality, fully inclusive services for young children of all abilities, including those with special needs. Today, Sewall provides education and therapeutic supports to 600 young children (birth-6) each year through a continuum of programs. Sewall fulfills its mission to provide inclusive, joyful learning environments using the power of partnerships, diversity, and belonging to enrich the social and academic growth of every child and family. GOALS: To help each child build a solid foundation for school and lifelong success, Sewall provides high-quality, inclusive education in responsive classroom communities and in partnership with families. To meet this goal, Sewall’s staff focuses on the following objectives: 1) Implement fully inclusive early childhood programs in communities across Denver 2) Improve, solidify, and enhance staff wages, retention and ongoing professional development 3) Form strong, ongoing family partnerships to build advocacy for lifelong success. CURRENT PROGRAMS: Sewall offers an array of early education and intervention programs to meet the individual needs of every child. All of Sewall’s programs meet three key programmatic goals: They are inclusive, transdisciplinary, and family-focused. Sewall utilizes a unique, transdisciplinary intervention model comprised of teams of professionals in partnership with families- early childhood educators and special educators, physical and occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and mental health professionals. These teams staff every program collaboratively and work together with families to support each child’s unique needs. Sewall’s programs are: • Inclusive Preschool Program - Sewall’s best practice model of inclusion preschool programs offered at over 8 sites across Denver provides educational and therapeutic intervention and an opportunity for children of all abilities and learning styles to learn side-by-side. Sewall’s preschool serves approximately 330 children annually across 19 classrooms. Programming runs year-round with a full-day option, one of the few in Denver for families with children who have complex developmental, medical, or behavioral concerns. Sewall’s NAEYC- accredited program. Approximately 70% of these children come from a low-income background. • Infant/Toddler Early Intervention Program - Sewall’s transdisciplinary team provides family-based educational and therapeutic supports to young children, birth to 3 years, with special needs in their homes as well as 2 full day toddler rooms at the Koelbel Building. Sewall impacts at least 150 children a year through DGKHS; approximately 95% are low-income. • Diagnostic and Evaluation (D&E) Clinic – Sewall’s D&E Clinic provides comprehensive evaluations and reports for children with developmental concerns. The assessment team, which includes a clinical psychologist, speech pathologist, occupational therapist, and a developmental pediatrician, works with families to give indepth diagnostic information and recommendations for follow through. Sewall’s clinic is also one of few in the Metro Area who accept Medicaid for children from low-income families. In 2018, the team conducted 68 diagnostic evaluations; 67 of these children were Medicaid eligible. • Family Support Program – Sewall partners with families to support the individual needs of each child. Family support includes home visits, advocacy training, and resource management to promote parenting skills. Sewall also works year-round to facilitate and foster a peer network between families. In fall of 2016, Sewall began Partners in Leadership, a year-long advocacy training project serving 20 families. A second cohort, serving 20 additional families, began in January 2018. Kids Connect, offered in partnership with the Junior League, provides bi-monthly dinner and literacy-based activities to upwards of 20 families.
