Mission Statement

Eco-Cycle’s mission is to innovate, implement, and advocate for local and global Zero Waste solutions to foster a more regenerative, equitable, and climate-resilient future.

About This Cause

Eco-Cycle is one of the oldest mission-based recyclers and Zero Waste organizations in the US, and an innovator in resource conservation. We perform mission-based business activities, such as operating the Boulder County Recycling Center, providing Zero Waste business services, and creating the nation’s first Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM). These activities generate revenue that helps us carry out our program work to reduce consumption emissions and even work to REVERSE climate change by drawing carbon dioxide back down from the atmosphere. These programs include: 1. Reducing Plastic Production and Pollution: We are passing and helping to implement legislation in Colorado that will curb plastic consumption and pollution. Recent victories include 2021’s Plastic Pollution Reduction Act (HB23-1162) and 2022’s Producer Responsibility Program (HB 22-1355). 2. Empowering schools: Our award-winning Green Star Schools® program engaged over 40,000 students and staff with environmental education and daily Zero Waste practice, helping participating schools reduce waste by up to 67%. 3. Shaping policy: We’re guiding Colorado’s Producer Responsibility program to set a national standard for free statewide recycling, incentivizing brands to reduce packaging waste and adopt recyclable, nontoxic materials. 4. Building compost solutions: We’re developing a local network of decentralized composting sites in Boulder County, in partnership with regenerative farmers who use the compost to enrich their lands. 5. Advancing fleet electrification: We’re leading fleet electrification in the waste, recycling, and composting industry with the addition of a second 100% electric-powered collection truck, advancing our “Zero Waste, Zero Emissions” goals. 6. Creating urban resilience: We’re partnering with the City of Boulder to build a neighborhood urban forest, planting thousands of trees and shrubs across Boulder to enhance ecosystems, provide shade, and strengthen climate resilience. 7. Recycling at scale: As operators of the Boulder County Recycling Center and the Eco-Cycle/City of Boulder Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM), we recycled over 95 million pounds of materials—keeping valuable resources in use and out of landfills. Read about these successes and others in Eco-Cycle’s 2024 Annual report.
