Mission Statement
Since 1977, Clinica Family Health has existed to provide a health care safety net to the low-income residents living in Boulder, Broomfield and Adams counties in Colorado. We provide a full spectrum of primary care, dental services and integrated behavioral health care. In 2020, we provided care to more than 60,000 individuals.
About This Cause
Clinica Family Health is a community health center that provides high-quality medical care to low-income, uninsured people. We offer primary and preventive medical care that emphasizes health education. Our service area encompasses the area immediately to the north of the Denver metropolitan region. It reaches from the Continental Divide in Boulder and Gilpin counties, through Broomfield County, to Thornton in Adams County. Clinica patients receive primary medical care that emphasizes prevention and health education. Specifically, our services include: prenatal, postpartum and obstetric care; gynecological care; immunizations; wellness visits throughout the life cycle; cancer screenings; acute care; chronic disease management; minor surgical procedures (e.g., colposcopies); case management and referral services; and in-patient hospitalization at Avista Adventist Hospital in Louisville, CO, and St. Anthony North Hospital in Westminster, CO. Clinica also has three dental clinics that provide preventative and restorative care to patients. Since 40% of Clinica’s patients predominantly speak a language other than English, almost all of our providers, medical assistants and front desk staff are bilingual. Written materials are available in both English and Spanish. Clinica was founded by Alicia Sanchez, a woman whose huge heart made up for the lack of even a high school education. Back before the Lafayette/Louisville area had hundreds of doctors and a 99-bed hospital, back when the area was dotted with commercial farms that hired dozens of Spanish-speaking migrant workers, Alicia was known as “la medica.” People turned to her when they were sick or hurt and had no money. And despite being a single mother of seven children who worked picking crops, she always had time to help someone else. Every week, she loaded her car “Susie” with the area’s poor and drove to University Hospital in Denver so people could get low-cost care. She spent days waiting with them, translating and helping them understand test results. She knew that Lafayette and Louisville desperately needed affordable primary health care. Through a true grassroots effort, Alicia, along with community leaders and health care providers, started Clinica in 1977. The first Clinica office was in a 500-square-foot house in Lafayette. The master bedroom was divided into two exam rooms. The living room served as waiting room, check-in and medical records. The kitchen served as the clinic’s lab, complete with a chicken egg incubator in one corner that grew throat cultures. That first annual budget of $75,000 allowed Clinica to provided care to several hundred migrant farm workers and low-income locals. Today, the organization has a $73 million operating budget and 670 employees. Our one site has grown into seven medical and three dental facilities: the Lafayette Medical and Dental Clinic, the Pecos Medical and Dental Clinic, the Thornton Medical and Dental Clinic, the Westminster Medical Clinic, the People’s Medical Clinic and two smaller clinics in Black Hawk and Nederland. Staff provided 62,000 individuals with 290,000 medical visits in 2022. Even though our organization has grown substantially, our mission has not changed: Clinica exists to provide affordable, high-quality health care to low-income, uninsured and unemployed people of all ages and all walks of life. Our ultimate goal in doing this is to help people live as healthy, productive, self-sufficient and pain-free lives as possible.
