Mission Statement

Four Mile Historic Park offers the Denver community a 12-acre Park to discover early Colorado and draw parallels between their contemporary lives and the people, events, ideas, and stories that helped shape the region. Located along the Cherry Creek and open to the public since 1978, the Four Mile House, both a Denver Landmark and National Historic Place, serves as the centerpiece of the property.

About This Cause

Four Mile Historic Park offers a variety of educational experiences that connect 40,000 annual visitors to the rich history, traditions, and cultures of the region. Education is at the core of our mission, and we are open year-round to visitors, providing guided tours of the Four Mile House Museum and surrounding acreage. Our rural site in the midst of the city brings the frontier to life in a very visual and visceral way; it truly feels like a gateway to the past. We host a variety of public programs (special events, classes, youth day camps, etc.) with hands-on opportunities to learn about early Denver as well as the chance to engage with historic demonstrators. Community classes and events seek to integrate cultural history in the daily lives of both youth and adult participants. For example, our Four Mile class series offers contemporary information and resources on a variety of historically-rooted skillsets - such as beekeeping, backyard livestock management, and gardening - that still resonate with a modern urban audience. Our educational birthday parties allow participants to immerse themselves in daily lives and traditions of those who lived generations prior while celebrating a moment in their own story. Education is fundamental to what we do, but enjoyment is an important tool in the learning process. During our last fiscal year, we served nearly 12,000 area school children through on-site field trips and outreach programming. The support of donors allows us to keep fees low as well as offered reduced-cost programming to groups who would otherwise not be able to afford the trip. Last year, we offered reduced programming to 2,200 area students. We believe that an understanding of history is critical to vital communities and an engaged citizenry. By examining past challenges, triumphs, and failures, we can develop better solutions for the future,
