Mission Statement

LightHawk changes the way we see the Earth. We mobilize volunteer pilots, photographers, environmental experts, and storytellers to make images, collect data, inform the public and share their experiences. LightHawk provides flights free of charge to conservation groups, thereby enabling our partners to quickly and efficiently understand environmental issues and determine the factors needed to promote effective solutions.

About This Cause

LightHawk accelerates conservation success through the powerful perspective of flight. Founded in 1979, LightHawk's network of volunteer pilots has flown thousands of scientists, conservation practitioners and the media in order to collect compelling environmental information and imagery. Using small aircraft, our partners are able to more quickly and efficiently understand environmental issues and determine the factors needed to promote effective long-term solutions. The view from a small airplane reveals the interconnections of wildlands, watersheds and human development in a way that is impossible to achieve on the ground. Each year, LightHawk donates hundreds of flights in private aircraft to empower conservation efforts. We carefully screen our flight requests to ensure each mission warrants LightHawk’s substantial planning efforts, as well as the generous contribution of our experienced aviators who provide their time, aircraft, fuel, and expertise for these flights free of charge. Year after year, these flights empower conservation and make environmental protection successful. Join us as we put aviation to work for conservation.
