Mission Statement
The mission of The Blue Bench (formerly RAAP) is to eliminate sexual assault and diminish the impact it has on individuals, their loved ones and our community through comprehensive issue advocacy, prevention and care. Through these efforts, The Blue Bench works to change the conversation and culture around sexual violence. Since its start in 1983, The Blue Bench has assisted more than 450,000 individuals to heal and thrive after a sexual assault, including victims, friends and family members.
About This Cause
Imagine if no resident of Colorado had to fear sexual assault. Imagine no victims of sexual assault facing post-traumatic stress disorder, alcohol or drug abuse, depression or suicidal thoughts. Imagine no families, friends and loved ones suffering with the victim of the assault. This vision drives the work of The Blue Bench and has since its inception over 30 years ago. Three women founded The Blue Bench (formerly known as Rape Awareness and Assistance Program) to help a friend who had been sexually assaulted and could find no resources in the Denver area. They started a hotline to help victims. The next step was addressing the problem more holistically and working on prevention in schools, then adding therapy groups to meet the varying needs of victims and their loved ones.
