LAND TRUST OF THE TREASURE VALLEY

BOISE, Idaho, 83702 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to conserve nature close to home in southwestern Idaho. The Land Trust identifies lands with special natural, scenic, recreational and agricultural values, and works with willing landowners to conserve these lands through acquisition, easement, education, and good stewardship.

About This Cause

We are a 25+ year old, nonprofit, community supported organization that acquires land and / or easements for conservation or recreation purposes, with a staff of 3, an Executive Director, a Conservation Programs Manager, a Stewardship and a Communications Coordinator; and supported by 100s of volunteers and about 2,500 supporters. Our three program areas where we work are: Land Conservation: We protect land, such as acquiring the easement for, and maintaining, the “Entrance Exam” trail, also known as the Trail to Stack Rock, and purchasing Harrison Hollow, a 59 acre property that jumpstarted the effort to encourage the city to purchase the adjoining 260 acre parcel- both parcels, while we each manage our own portions, are offered to the public jointly as Hillside to Hollow. Stewardship: We believe it is our responsibility to take care of the natural areas that we manage, and other public lands that are available to us, and so we partner with a number of other organizations and agencies to do trail work, and manage nature areas, such as growing and planting native plants for restoration projects. The native plant effort is a growing program area for us, as we step up to help fill a growing need for small scale production of native plants (that may not be commercially profitable, and so not readily available) in areas impacted by human activity. Community Building: We believe that when the community knows about nature and the landscape where they live, they become better caretakers, stewards and ambassadors for nature, and so we offer education programs for schools, as well as volunteer opportunities for supporters. We call these people who volunteer- whether it be to do hands on trail work, in a booth at an event, or for other things we do, such as native plant restoration projects or at our Les Bois Film Festival, our Boise Foothill Friends (BFFs). Our Stewardship coordinator teaches outdoor education to students in a number of schools during the school year, as well as at summer camp programs in the summer. In the past couple of years, we have been working with the refugee community to introduce these new Boisians’ to the foothills landscape, and in turn, hopefully provide them with a greater connection to nature and their new home.
