Mission Statement
To provide resources and facilities that support and protect abused and neglected children and their families.
About This Cause
Sunlight Children's Services (Formerly SCARF) operates two separate program focusing on the needs of abused and neglect children. The Sunlight Children’s Home is a temporary emergency shelter for children that have been removed from their home by the state or law enforcement due to abuse or neglect. When a law enforcement officer goes in and determines the child needs to be removed from the home, they are brought directly to us. We do not get a say in who we serve, we serve whatever child(ren) walk through our door. We have a capacity of 14 beds, and we keep the children safe, and make sure they are fed, as most of them come in with missing many meals, and starving. Many of the kids have never slept in a bed, or had sheets or blankets, so a lot of this stuff is new to them. We continue to see some unimaginable trauma with the kids that we are serving. We serve children birth to 18. We come to work every day knowing what an emotional struggle it can be, and get up and do it again. The stories are endless and it never stops. We also operate the Sunlight Child Advocacy Center in El Dorado. The child advocacy center (CAC) provides a multi-disciplinary team response when abuse or neglect is suspected. Working with community partners such as law enforcement, child protection services, mental health, and hospital staff, CAC provides a safe environment for the child and non-offending family throughout the investigation process, as well as support after leaving the facility. The CAC focuses on the best interests of the child, helping families navigate a process that can be confusing and traumatic. We employ a forensic interviewer and a family advocate that are on every child’s team throughout this process. We do recorded interviews with the child, so that their voice can be finally heard. We try and get them to talk about every detail of their abuse, and the goal is to have this recorded interview so that the child doesn’t have to tell their story to all these different agencies over and over again, as it adds a layer of trauma to the child every time they have to recount the abuse and tell someone else. We will walk them through the court process and be with them in the court room, with our main goal to help this child from ever being re-victimized.
