Mission Statement

The Mission of the WPSBC Foundation is to financially support the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children's Mission to nurture the unique abilities of individuals with blindness and visual impairment through educational excellence and a lifetime of learning.

About This Cause

The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children provides individualized educational, medical, and therapeutic services to nearly 500 children and adults from infancy to 59 years of age from 33 counties in western Pennsylvania. All individuals have a visual impairment or blindness, most of them with additional multiple disabilities and medical complexities. Programming is provided through our On-Campus school programs, A Child’s VIEW inclusive childcare, Learning Adventures for the Visually Impaired (LAVI) Adult Program, Residential Program and Outreach Services. Founded in 1887, the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children (WPSBC) was originally chartered by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a place for students with blindness to receive an academic, commercial and industrial curriculum, but has undergone significant transformations over the years by adapting to the ever-changing needs of its population. In 1894, the school found its permanent home in the Oakland neighborhood of Pittsburgh and continues to operate on the same property today. As 1 of 4 chartered schools in Pennsylvania, WPSBC is publicly funded and is additionally supported by generous donors and foundations. This allows the school to provide the essential educational and therapeutic programming to students that they are in critical need of while underwriting costs for families. The School has adapted its programs and services over time to best support the needs of our students and have created opportunities for each student to achieve their own unique success. Our integrated service deliveries model incorporates therapies into everyday school activities, ensuring daily access to learning to enhance learning without limiting access to education. Each student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and is supported by a uniquely qualified educational team consisting of certified teachers of the visually impaired, physical and occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, orientation and mobility instructors, behavior specialists, nurses, case managers, instructional aides, consultants and more. The School’s dedicated and compassionate team members build educational and support programs around each student providing every opportunity for them to succeed. The Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children Foundation is a separate entity from the School. The Foundation focuses on fundraising and managing donated funds while school administrators and educators focus on the students and their education. The Foundation was founded in July 2019 to solidify the School's financial future and to ensure each student receives educational excellence, including continued learning into adulthood.
