About This Cause
After witnessing the global impact of climate change, hunger, disease, violence, and conflict, physicians and humanitarians Hope Ferdowsian and Nik Kulkarni were driven to establish Phoenix Zones Initiative (PZI), a global nonprofit that engages leaders and the public to advance health and justice for people, animals, and the planet. Across six continents and over twenty years, Drs. Ferdowsian and Kulkarni witnessed the incredible promise of resilience—how people and animals can heal in healthy environments. Hope wrote about this phenomenon in Phoenix Zones: Where Strength Is Born and Resilience Lives. Through a commitment to kindness, dignity, liberty, and justice, Phoenix Zones nurture what’s known in medical circles as the Phoenix Effect—wherein individuals and society can rise from the proverbial ashes and thrive. With the help of key partners, PZI provides expertise and visionary leadership to create a better future for all—a world where the rights, health, and well-being of every human and animal, and the planet, are protected and nurtured. PZI works with partners to secure a world where social, economic, and environmental policies prioritize uplifting the most vulnerable and preserving our natural world. Where businesses operate with a deep sense of corporate social responsibility, integrating ethical practices into their operations, and where economic advancement goes hand in hand with environmental sustainability and social progress. Our multi-pronged approach includes: • providing education and outreach to promote civic engagement and partnerships; • analyzing and solving complex, interconnected problems through a social, economic, public health, legal, and political lens; and • advocating for systems-level and grassroots reforms that benefit vulnerable populations and the environment. PROGRAMMING AND IMPACT Education and Outreach: PZI builds unique bridges across various sectors to address urgent problems such as the climate emergency, air and water pollution, communicable and non-communicable diseases, pandemics, violence, and other threats to people, animals, and the planet. PZI educates and trains professionals, the public, and the next generation of leaders to advance meaningful change in their fields and for local and global communities. PZI continues to bring world-renowned leaders and experts to the conversation through partnerships with organizations worldwide. Research and Analysis: PZI leads complex analyses to identify policies and practices that advance human, animal, and planetary health and well-being. PZI’s scholarship and expertise spans subjects that include children’s rights, health and research policy, and the influence of social and environmental determinants of health for people, animals, and the planet. PZI’s expertise has been featured in publications that collectively reach hundreds of millions of international readers. Advocacy: PZI creates unique coalitions to advance innovative policy solutions for issues ranging from food policy, to public health and research priorities, to sustainable development. PZI serves as a voice for people, animals, and the planet in international forums that range from the World Health Organization to the UN High-Level Political Forum. From Washington, DC, to the UN, PZI is influencing changes in international and national policy. PZI is an accredited organization of the UN Environment Program and PZI has been recommended for Consultative Status with the United Nations Department of Social and Economic Affairs. PZI uses metrics and thoughtful analysis to quantify and assess our impact, which can be seen in our annual reports at phoenixzonesinitiative.org/annual-report.
