Mission Statement
White Pine Center’s mission is to educate, prevent, treat, and advocate for community members suffering from eating disorders, weight stigma, negative body image and trauma.
About This Cause
White Pine Center for Healing is the only facility in the tri-state area to offer specialized treatment and prevention programs for those struggling with eating disorders, body image, weight stigma and trauma. The vast majority (90%) of our services are to residents of Erie County, PA. Eating disorders have the second highest mortality rate of all mental health issues, superseded only by opioid abuse. In the U. S., person dies from an eating disorder every 52 minutes, with the highest causes of death being cardiac complications and suicide. They affect the entire family and are major major causes of lost productivity and medical costs. Eating disorders are complex bio-psycho-social diseases and usually require a team approach, including mental health therapy, a medical professional, a nutritionist and sometimes a psychiatrist. All of these professionals must understand that eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice, but serious and life threatening diseases that involve distortions in people’s eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions.(NIH) Eating disorders have become an epidemic and a public health crisis. They can affect anyone 4 years and up and affect all populations and demographics. The greatest percentage of EDs develop between the ages of 12-24 years, although the median age of onset is becoming younger. There are many risk factors involved with the onset of an eating disorder, including trauma, food insecurity, societal pressures and negative body image. Eating disorders can be prevented. The majority of evidence-based prevention programs focus on creating a positive body image, which is proven to be a major protective factor against all risky behaviors. Body image begins to develop at three years old. The most effective preventions target children, families, caregivers, and anyone with their eyes on children and adolescents. Stress management and emotional self regulation programs are also effective prevention and treatment modalities. White Pine Center’s clinical team of 6 therapists is constantly engaging in training in the most current best practices and current research in eating disorders. Our clinical director has over 16 years of experience in all levels of eating disorder care. We are in-network with most area insurances, including medicaid. We maintain grant/donation funded assistance for clients who cannot afford treatment due to lack of coverage, high deductibles and copays. Our outreach/prevention programs target area schools, groups, clubs and families. We provide training to area medical personnel as well as educational and caregiving staff. Our programs are in high demand and are totally funded by grants and donations so that they are accessible to everyone. Donations made to White Pine Center for Healing can have an enormous positive impact on the region. Your donations will help the agency to reach five times more children with prevention programming, helping to reduce the number of people who develop eating disorders, as well as all risky behaviors. They will also help offset the cost of specialized treatment for those who need it, but cannot afford it. Ultimately, your generosity will improve and potentially save the lives of many community members who struggle with eating disorders, body image issues, weight stigma, and trauma.
