Keyconcept Charities career development programs act as a catalyst to unlocks the doors for the current workforce while stimulating diversity, equity, and inclusion within interior design, graphic design, hospitality (culinary arts), and arts/culture industries. During these historic times, the pandemic has had a devasting impact on jobs for minorities and women placing more emphasis on the significant inequalities in the US workforce.

If you just focus on the section of the hospitality industry – restaurants, one can easily recognize the magnitude of the devasting impact on jobs for minorities and women. *In fact, job losses in the restaurant industry account for more than a quarter of the increase to the U.S. unemployment figures since the beginning of the pandemic, figures that have not been seen since the Great Depression In turn, a staggering 5.9 million restaurant jobs (at least 4.5 million of which are from independent restaurants) have vanished within a magnitude of the matter of weeks— the highest of all industries by far, nearly doubling the figure from the next most affected industry. (*Independent Restaurant Coalition Report).

The recent US Department of labor January 2021 jobs report indicates unemployment by race and gender: White Men 5.5%: Black Men 9.5%; White Women 5.1%; Latina Women 8.8%; Black Women 8.5%; Asian Women 6.1%.

Unless opportunities and gains are shared equitably among all workers, we will not have strong, ongoing economic growth. Inequality among ethnic groups, women, LGBTQ, and people with disabilities hinders prosperity for all and fuels the need for safety nets in place of self-empowerment, independence, dignity, and respect. Much of this inequality stems from long-standing, systemic, and structural inequities in the economy that have kept certain groups from having a fair chance to get ahead. The playing field is not level. Keyconcept Charities is working to correct these debilitating norms by providing a competitive edge for our interns through our hands-on intensive approach that yields outcomes that challenge the status quo. Our team is bringing our collective voice and interests to present viable competitive employment candidates that will ensure a sustainable, healthy economy.

Since its inception in 2019, Keyconcept Charities impact has provided intensive hands-on career development to 45 interns and the internship length ranged from 4 months until a year and a half. Due to the pandemic, we have experienced budget constraints preventing us from serving an optimal number of interns annually. With the appropriate funding, we are certain our team could provide intensive hands-on career development to 200 interns
annually and continue to expand as our funding opportunities increase.

Keyconcept Charities served 30 interns 2020: 50% male and 50% female; 66% minority (Black, Hispanic, and Asian) with 16% Black, 16% Hispanic and 30% Asian,33% White and 3% other; the purpose of enrollment was 57% continual career development; 30% college credit; 13% career change.

Keyconcept Charities provides mentoring and hands-on career development that attracts a range of candidates from entry-level college students, college students with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, professionals looking for continual career development, freelancers, and budding entrepreneurs. Based on the wide range of skills, our organization custom tailors our programs to foster the best results for each intern.

Upon arrival into our career development program, our team initially conducts and skill assessment to determine each interns’ skill level and gather the appropriate information to tailor a custom program that will challenge the intern, introduce new industry approaches/techniques, welcome enhanced problem solving, and require working in collaborative teams that are diverse and enhance intercultural competency.

Keyconcept Charities measures these two outcomes to continually determine our impact:
1) Interns' final internship evaluation of the career development program.
2) Keyconcept Charities considers our career development program interns as our customers. It is extremely important to be in touch with how the interns are experiencing the program and discover how the interns if the program has been beneficial for the intern or if not why.

Our team firmly believes that an internship is a two-way contract where both parties agree to a mutually beneficial learning experience and the end goal is to enhance both parties.

Our team conducts a final internship evaluation to assist the intern in identifying the techniques/skills they have gained and learn where they can improve to enhance their overall career experience.

Since diversity, equity and inclusion is a priority, we continue to network and stay engaged in the interior design, interior architecture, graphic design, hospitality (culinary arts), and arts/cultural industries to maintain an intercultural competent program.
