About This Cause

Big Apple Leadership Academy for the Arts, Inc. (BALAA), incorporated on July 31, 2019, was organized exclusively for charitable purposes. The corporation’s primary activity is providing New York City youth with positive artistic experiences through academic support, enrichment activities, character development programs, anti-bullying initiatives and music and arts workshops. The corporation fosters citizenship and prepares youth to be tomorrow’s leaders. The corporation provides outlets through which youth may become well rounded, healthy, capable and confident young men and women. Additionally, the corporation strives to conduct community outreach programs where we will conduct food and clothing drives for the needy, provide school supplies to the neighboring children and offer to the community a resource for positive creative expression. The corporation offers eight major programs as part of it's mission. BALAA Beauties is our all-girls empoerment program. The girls engage in a varity of activities including life skills classes, authorship projects, and STEAM activities in collaboration with BALAA Brawns, our male mentor program. The mentor program offers opportunities for positive engagement, access to resources and connections offered by the mentor collective, and vocational skills training. BALAA Legacy is our adult wellness program that focuses on financial, physical and mental health of our parents and members of the community at large. The Empire Marching Elite is our HBCU style all-star marching band, and Junior Empire Marching Elite is our youth and beginner band. Both programs focus on music theory, musicianship and character development, and participants engage in a host of performance opportunities. The BALAA After School Program offers academic support and music education, and it extends into the BALAA Summer Enrichment Program, which is a six-week summer camp that engages participants in a variety of arts activities. Northern Showstyle Band Coalition is a program of BALAA that brings together marching band programs in and around New York City, so they might offer each other support in developing their musicians and directors, and in training participants to audition for and acquire marching band scholarships to HBCUs.
