Mission Statement
DC Justice Lab is a team of law and policy experts researching, organizing, and advocating for large-scale changes to the District of Columbia’s criminal legal system. We develop smarter safety solutions that are evidence-driven, community-rooted, and racially just. We aim to fully transform the District’s approach to punishment and public safety and make it a national leader in justice reform.
About This Cause
DC Justice Lab was formed out of the immediate need to implement policy changes for those who are directly impacted by criminal laws in the District of Columbia. The District of Columbia is one the most heavily policed cities and one of the most racially-imbalanced systems of justice in the United States. DC has one of the highest incarceration rates in the country with one out of seven DC residents having a publicly-available criminal record. We promote decarceration, compassion, and giving people the tools and resources they need to thrive. We work with and transfer power to DC residents most impacted by criminal laws and policies.
