Mission Statement

RPLA is dedicated to eliminating recurrent pregnancy loss through the advancement of research into causes and treatments; to providing support and resources to those affected; and to increasing awareness of the impact of miscarriage and fertility challenges on women and families.

About This Cause

Recurrent Pregnancy Loss Association (RPLA) was founded in 2019 by Megan Hanson and Ben Burnham in the wake of their sixth miscarriage. Having endured five years of failed treatments and incomplete answers, they wanted to transform their frustration and grief into something positive, and spare other couples the heartache they experienced. Around 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in loss, which can cause a significant and lasting impact on the mental and physical health of couples trying to conceive. With time, most couples go on to have healthy pregnancies after a loss, however a percentage of women experience recurrent miscarriage—the loss of two or more clinical pregnancies before the 20th week. Of those who experience multiple miscarriages, the underlying reason often remains medically “unexplained.” These couples are not only repeatedly traumatized by the recurrent losses, but often undergo a myriad of medical procedures and fertility treatments in their efforts to have a baby. At RPLA, we believe that working together as a patient and medical community, we can support these families through their pain, find them better answers, and ultimately help them grow. This is accomplished through RPLA’s mission and specific efforts, including its: Research Program, which supports a wide range of scientific and clinical activities aimed at identifying causes of and treatments for recurrent pregnancy loss; Advocacy Program, which collects and shares individual stories of recurrent pregnancy loss to help clinical practitioners, scientific investigators, policy makers, and industry persons understand the patient experience of multiple miscarriages and why it deserves attention, and; Education Program, which provides resources and information to help women and their families and friends navigate the journey of recurrent pregnancy loss. RPLA is led by co-Founder, Megan Hanson, who currently donates her time to the organization.
