Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote the sport of rugby and its ethos by strengthening education, leadership development, and health & wellness.

About This Cause

Our foundation’s mission is to promote the sport of rugby and its ethos by strengthening education, leadership development, and health & wellness. For more than 200 years, the sport of rugby has encouraged students to pursue either post high school education or professional training. The goal was for the students to work hard to become leaders in their chosen professions, with the understanding that their personal success would allow them to also give back to their communities. As a result, the ethos of rugby created generations of leaders with a sense of duty to their community; a belief in the nobility of hard work, honor, and selflessness; and a determination to work for the betterment of those less fortunate than themselves. For this reason, the Ethos of Rugby Foundation currently awards seven post high school scholarships for students throughout our state each year, both to those participating in rugby and to those who do not. These scholarships range in size from $500 to $3,500. Our scholarship criteria emphasize “demonstrated leadership and community service” on the part of the recipients. We also provide participation scholarships for students-in-need with rugby and Fine Arts programs. In addition, our foundation annually awards grants to school rugby programs from elementary schools (flag rugby) through colleges, and to community organizations throughout Wisconsin. Past community grant recipients have included the Miracle League of Dane County, Porchlight Foundation, “Be the Cure” UW Carbone Cancer Center Fund, UW School of Education, International Crane Foundation, UW Upham Woods Outdoor Learning Center, and Madison Ballet.
