Mission Statement

Our mission is to promote the sport of rowing for all 8th grade, high school and college students including citizens in and around Vigo County, Indiana and in collaboration with local organizations to promote all human water sports while bringing focus to the Wabash River.

About This Cause

We are currently seeking assistance to build a much-needed boathouse and upgrade existing dock system to create a permanent facility to promote human watersports in our community at Fairbanks Park. More specifically, we are interested in promoting rowing, kayaking and canoeing from this facility to the underutilized Wabash River and surrounding areas. The Wabash Valley Crew (WVC) was created in 2016 for promoting rowing to 8th grade and high school students here in our community and elsewhere. We have subsequently competed with crew teams in Indiana, Illinois and Ohio. In our short existence and despite limited resources, we have received 1st, 2nd and 3rd place medals competing against other schools/clubs with far great resources. We are very proud of our rowers for their accomplishments to date. In 2019 we collaborated with Saint Mary of the Woods (SMWC) and created the first collegiate rowing club. The WVC coached their rowers who were able to complete under the SMWC name and with fellow college crews. As of 2021, we have students from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Indiana State University and SMWC rowing and assisting with coaching the crew. With a boathouse we would be able to contribute more time and resources to the college experience. We have been in collaboration with the YMCA and Girl Scouts to promote not only rowing but kayaking and canoeing at Fairbanks Park. The YMCA is best at scheduling classes and the boathouse would be just outside their front door in order to do just that. The preliminary meetings with the YMCA have been well received as well as talks with the Girl Scouts who are also located in Fairbanks Park. (The YMCA has started their first kayaking classes this August, 2024.) And in the future it is our hope to put a trailer hitch on the YMCA bus and trailer kayaks to Dewey Point for day excursions in ornithology, biology and wildlife study. This idea was also well received by the YMCA and Girl Scouts. On other items of interest, is the many emails requesting rowing classes for adults (Master Class). Once we have a facility in which to store needed boats, we can have the YMCA offer Master Class rowing and kayaking classes to the greater community. And we have approached the Vigo County School Corporation to start an erg program (rowing machines) created by the George Pocock Foundation specifically designed for middle school students. Once these classes are created and operating, they will want to graduate to the rowing experience on the Wabash River. We also invited Arshay Cooper to the community three times, who has written a book "A Most Beautiful Thing" which speaks of his experiences in the 1990's of being the first all-black high school rowing team in the country and his humble beginnings in the housing projects of Chicago, IL. He spoke to all five middle schools to help inspire them to the wonderful sport of rowing. These are just a few of the many opportunities we have in our community and it will also help showcase one of our greatest assets, the Wabash River.
