Mission Statement
Journey21's mission is to provide safe, supportive, and enriching living and learning options for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in Waukesha County and surrounding communities.
About This Cause
Our vision is a day when every adult with IDD has the home of their choice where they can have friends, opportunities to grow, and live independently within a vibrant and inclusive community. We have three main pillars: Programs, Outings and Club Journey21 has been offering programs, outings, and clubs since June 2021 for adults with intellectual or development disabilities (IDD) in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin and surrounding Waukesha County communities. We offer sport camps, fun and fitness days, small group social outings, bowling and art classes, and visits to Milwaukee and Madison attractions. In June 2021, we had 10 participants. Now, in December 2022, we have 95 participants and this number is growing quickly. Enrichment Center Academies 8-21 Transition Academy - The 18-21 Transition Academy is designed for young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) ages 18 to 21. Our goal is to increase the daily independence of each student by providing them with the necessary skills (communication, socialization, personal health, vocational, etc.), experiences and opportunities within our community. Life Academy - Once students turn 21, they exit the high school system and they "fall off the cliff" as there are minimal post-secondary options available for adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (IDD). In looking at the next steps of natural post-secondary options including educational, employment, residential, social activities, and vocational training, the IDD population is greatly underserved. Journey21 is bridging the gap by providing a highly structured After 21 curriculum (two year program-32 courses) called the Life Academy where our adults will receive career readiness training, participate in internships/work experiences learning specific job skills, continue developing their independent living skills, socialization skills and building community relationships. Summer Academy - The Journey21 Summer Academy is for young adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) ages 16 or older. This program will take place in our Enrichment Center as well as the community, providing experiences to increase independent living and social skills, volunteer participation, and personal health awareness. Building a Community - Journey21 is planning to build and manage a residential community for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities (IDD) in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. Our community will be a safe and inclusive neighborhood of one- and two-bedroom condominiums, one-and two-bedroom cottages, and amenities designed for the needs and aspirations of approximately 40 adults with IDD.
