Mission Statement

Westlawn is committed to providing a balance of challenging academics that are personalized and matched to each student’s extraordinary talents coupled with intentional social and emotional skill development. We embrace each student’s uniqueness, meet them where they are, empower them to achieve their next level of excellence, and prepare them for college and life. We provide a culture of neuroscience-driven innovation paired with nurturing, successful teacher-student relationships. Westlawn redefines the experience of school so that our students are empowered to rise to the level of their extraordinary talents. We emphasize the development of critical thinking and questioning skills in both our academics and in our social-emotional learning program. Our partnership with students and families leads to a renewed trust in the possibility that school can be the impetus and locus for authentic learning, success, and inspiration.

About This Cause

In 2020, Westlawn School was founded based on the need to provide an environment with specialized education designed to holistically meet the needs of twice exceptional students in Winston-Salem, NC. The school began in a 1,000 square foot classroom with 6 students who were twice exceptional (2e). We have increased our enrollment and continue to make improvements to our campus- both inside and outside. Westlawn students are often referred to as twice exceptional (2e) meaning, they have above average intellectual ability, and are perhaps even gifted in certain areas. In the traditional school setting, they may struggle with social relationships and have difficulty communicating with others and making friends. This student may have occasional outbursts when situations feel out of control or may seem withdrawn and isolated from the group. They may struggle with anxiety, perform poorly on tests, and may have trouble with executive functions such as preparing and organizing materials. While excelling in one area this student may perform poorly in others, even though they are intelligent and able to learn. The Westlawn School student tends to perform better in smaller groups with multi-sensory instruction and social skill support. While we often refer to our school as a program for children who are twice exceptional (i.e., gifted in one area(s), delayed in other(s), no formal diagnosis is required. We appreciate your care about our twice exceptional (2e) population- your compassion and generosity will help us provide educational support for students in need of a place to call home, a place that transcends the word normal and embraces our own normalcy. Over the past year, the generosity of our community has been instrumental in helping us realize the vision of Westlawn, particularly we have: ● Designed the Westlawn Woods, complete with four (4) zones to facilitate outdoor learning experiences, play, and community gatherings ● Completed Phase 1 of the Westlawn Woods (i.e., designs of the Westlawn Woods and installation of a walking trail that covers the perimeter of our 1.5+ acre of land) ● Designed an addition to the current facility which will allow our enrollment to increase by nearly 75% ● Improved the current facility with a new HVAC system ● Supported individualized education and personalized learning with a 2:1 student to faculty/staff ratio As we look to the future, we are in need of a significant increase of scholarship funds as well as financial support to increase our outdoor learning space (i.e., Westlawn Woods). The historical support of our community has allowed us to build and maintain this unique school. With your continued support, we will be able to continue to offer an individualized curriculum in a progressive indoor and outdoor environment that normalizes each child’s uniqueness while simultaneously and strategically increasing our enrollment numbers to be affordable for students with financial needs.
