Mission Statement
McCurdy Ministries, formerly known as McCurdy School, is a 109 year old faith based educational support nonprofit that seeks to help students and families in Española, NM, succeed in school and in life through our preschool, after school, mental health, summer camp, breakfast and lunch and volunteer ministries. McCurdy Ministries provides support to McCurdy Charter School as well as the broader community and touches the lives of more than 500 students every school day. The need is great In our community because 28% of the population lives under the Federal Poverty Line, 25% of adults 25 and over have not graduated from high school or earned a GED and we have one of the highest death by heroin overdose rates in the United States. In addition, 60% of the children in Española are being raised by their grandparents.
About This Cause
McCurdy Schools was founded by United Brethren deaconess, Mellie Perkins, in 1912 and was the only school in the Española Valley at that time. Over McCurdy's109 year history this nonprofit has not only educated thousands of outstanding graduates who have gone on to make a profound impact on the community and the world, McCurdy also started the first fire department, the first medical clinic, the first collegiate nursing program, the first hospital, the first GED program and the first community recreation program in the Española Valley. In 1968 when the merger between the Evangelical United Brethren and Methodist Church occurred McCurdy School became and still is a United Methodist nonprofit related to Global Ministries and United Methodist Women National Office. After 2008 and the economic downturn fewer families in the community could afford private school tuition despite the significant financial aid provided. McCurdy School looked for a creative solution to this problem and applied to the State of New Mexico Public Education Department to open McCurdy Charter School, a public school on the campus. The mission school closed in May of 2012 with 237 students and McCurdy Charter School opened in August of 2012 with 540 students. At that time McCurdy Schools of Northern New Mexico began using the trade name McCurdy Ministries and became an educational support nonprofit providing services to students and families of the charter school as well as the broader community. Services provided include a free preschool, low cost after school care, a school based mental health program, a breakfast and lunch program, a summer camp and a volunteer program. Currently, every school day McCurdy Ministries touches the lives of 500 school age children through these programs. Between 2014-2019 McCurdy Ministries worked hard to help provide the charter school their own campus on the west side of the McCurdy Ministries campus. McCurdy Ministries donated $1.4 million in land, buildings and cash to help make possible a new building for the charter school. That new building was completed during the summer of 2017, the charter school moved out of the McCurdy Ministries buildings and McCurdy Ministries is in the process of repurposing those buildings to become a Community Center. We will expand programming to include an Adult Ministries Center, Teen Center, Children's Ministries Center, Retreat Center, and Economic Development Collaborative Hub. McCurdy Ministries is a dynamic, ever-changing, faith-based, educational support non-profit with a long track record of making a difference in the Española Valley and has demonstrated an ability to change to better meet the needs of the community which is why 109 years later McCurdy is still "helping students and their families succeed in school and in life."
