Mission Statement

The Humane Society of Taos [dba Stray Hearts Animal Shelter (SH)], is proud to be a member of the Socially Conscious Sheltering movement (www.scsheltering.org), and has adopted its core principles as its own organizational values; respectful treatment of animals, transparency and leadership, thoughtful public policy, and safe communities. As a non-profit shelter and adoption facility, SH has operated in our current location since 1995. We are wholly committed to reuniting lost pets with their families and providing humane care and shelter for surrendered, lost, and homeless companion animals in Taos County, New Mexico. Stray Hearts intakes 450+ animals annually, and with a steadfast goal of a 90% + live-release rate (92% in 2021-2024), our bearing is set in one unwavering direction–securing loving and responsible homes for every vulnerable animal in our care. SHs’ mission is focused on improving the lives of shelter animals in every way possible. Our Foster, Adoption, Transfer, Spay/Neuter, and Behavior Modification Programs keep us sharply focused on our foremost goals: pet population control, animal advocacy for those most in need, and monitoring their individual physical, emotional, and behavioral needs for total health and wellness. Additionally, we promote animal population control and public education to establish long-term positive management of companion animals in our area. We ensure that all pets adopted from Stray Hearts are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and appropriately vaccinated.

About This Cause

As a community-based no-kill shelter with a 94% live release rate, Stray Hearts is strongly committed to providing humane care and shelter for lost, surrendered and stray companion animals in Taos County, New Mexico. For 30 years, Stray Hearts has operated as the sole refuge for these animals within Taos County’s extensive 2,200 square miles; there is no municipal shelter facility at the Town or County level. Program Activities It’s not enough to simply provide food, water and shelter for Stray Hearts’ animals while they await their potential adopters. An understanding of basic feline/canine welfare requirements compels us as a shelter to provide for their overall needs–emotional/mental/physical–and we regard this provision as a core component of our primary mission; increasing the shelter animals’ chances of adoption into loving and responsible homes. Stray Hearts’ Animal Welfare Programs are therefore at the heart of our daily activities and include; -Open adoption processes with shelter-based and public events -Spay/Neuter/vaccination/microchipping for all shelter animals -Hands-on shelter enrichment -Emergency medical care for lost/stray/abandoned animals -Foster Care for those animals not yet ready for adoption -Professional Behavior Modification training for at-risk dogs Community Outreach Our Community-Based Shelter Model is collaborative: it encourages stakeholders (citizens, local governments and businesses, veterinarians, First Nation Pueblos, etc..) to actively address our community’s severe and pervasive stray dog and feral cat problem with updated animal welfare laws, public education, and more low-cost accessible companion animal services. Stray Hearts’ current community outreach programs and collaborative partnerships include; -A FREE Community Pet Food Pantry as a community resource available to all Taos residents regardless of circumstances. -Emergency boarding and care as disaster relief for any lost or evacuated owned animals -Post-Adoption support to prevent further surrenders -Shots N’ Chips, low- or no-cost monthly vaccine and microchip clinics for owned pets -Adoption sponsorships by local businesses -Local Community Foundations and state government that offer spay/neuter funding -Numerous local and national businesses and organizations such as Walmart, Tractor Supply, and Nusenda Credit Union, that lend support/venues for public humane education and adoption events, countless fundraisers, etc…
