Mission Statement
Valencia Shelter Services (VSS) aids individuals and families affected by Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse in their journey to do the hard and heart work of healing, finding justice, creating stability, and building new lives free from the effects of violence. We provide bi-lingual, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, best-practice crisis intervention and wraparound Survivor Services including Emergency Shelter, Housing, Counseling, Advocacy, our Nationally Accredited Child Advocacy Center, and our newest addition to our Survivor Care Continuum- The VSS Satellite SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner). We seek systemic change to end demographical and generational cycle of violence and abuse.
About This Cause
Valencia Shelter Services began in 1989 as a grassroots 24-hour Crisis Line, and has evolved into leading 501(c)3 Nonprofit Organization providing a Comprehensive Crisis Intervention, Advocacy, Care and Recovery Continuum for individuals and families doing the hard and heart work of hoping, healing, finding justice and building new lives free from the effects of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse. While our Administrative Offices are located in Los Lunas, NM and VSS' Emergency Shelter resides in an undisclosed location in Belen, NM, VSS also the official provider of Domestic Violence Services in Torrance county, partners with Socorro, Catron, Sandoval and Bernalillo Counties and Laguna and Isleta Pueblos, and as the only tri-service (Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse) agency in Central New Mexico, 1 of only 2 Domestic Violence shelters in the state who will also house Victims of Sexual Assault, and provides the only Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner services between Albuquerque and Las Cruses, our service area and Survivor support is truly statewide. Our emergency and transitional bi-lingual, trauma-informed, best-practice supports, programs, and services include: a 24/7 Crisis Line, Basic Needs Items, Emergency Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Shelter, Transitional Housing Programs, the Family Peace Initiative Program to facilitate rehabilitation of offenders, a Legal Advocacy Program to assist with legal identity documentation, orders of protection, court filings, and proceedings; Mental Health Therapy with specialized individual and group counseling; the VSS Satellite SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) Unit that provides the only crisis-medical care and collection of time-sensitive forensic evidence to help prosecute and convict offenders between Albuquerque and Las Cruses, Statewide Multidisciplinary Teams and Domestic Violence/Sexual Assault Task Force that triage and inform current and future victim service needs and consist of City, County, and State Law Enforcement and Governmental Agencies, partner organizations, coalitions, and survivors themselves, and our Nationally Accredited Child Advocacy Center dedicated solely to the care, support, and legal rights of our Child Survivors.
