About This Cause

Dba The Haase House, located in Mukwonago, Wisconsin, is a ranch home on a very quiet residential street adjacent to a community park and close to the local businesses. This home is only utilized during the day for hourly day services that provide life skill instruction to young adults ages 18-38 who have disabilities. Because The Haase House is focused on community integration we engage with our neighbors and our local community on a daily basis. It is the goal of HCC that we provide opportunities through the implementation of an instructional model along with goals for each young adult with a disability. We strongly uphold the concept of self-determination and believe they each have a choice and a voice to pursue what they desire for their futures. Providing post-high school supports and services assures their families that their daily living skills will not plateua, but become more self-sufficient, independent and purposeful. Working closely with families, listening to our clients and focusing on the "whole" person dispels many fears of the families, care givers, and disabled young adults, and make it a reality to plan for a meaningful future and the lifestyle of their choice within their community. Our curriculum and programming are designed specific to the goals and needs voiced by our clients. The Haase House provides services at a 1:3 staff to client ratio which is unheard of. We strongly believe that with this type of engagement between staff and clients, we can assure safety, relationship building and growth in so many other areas of life like social skills, money management, health and wellness, giving to others, household chores, literacy, food preparation, organization, social-emotional regulation, communication, volunteerism/employment, use of technology and so much more. There is a immense amount of instruction and natural learning that takes place throughout the day. And doing this all in a comfortable home setting provides the ideal environment that is applied to real life, safe and calm. When our clients begin to see that they can achieve things they never thought possible, engaging them in further learning comes easy. After surviving two years during the pandemic and one more year, we have been able to "fill the house" to capacity, develop a successful model for supported employment and build so many community networks with organizations such as the neighbors, local chamber, library, churches, the YMCA, two school districts, colleges, local employers, local busineses, two animal shelters, the Village Board, advocacy groups, local day service providers and so many more. We currently have 8 Board Members, 7 Fund Development Committee members and 10 staff members. Our staff consists of amazing individuals with the skills in the areas of occupational therapy, occupational therapy students, therapeutic recreation, art therapy, special education paraprofessional and human services. We are forming a Curriculum and Program Enhancement Committee to assist with providing The Haase House with guidance, resources and support so we can improve upon our meaningful and effective services to reach goals even faster with our low staff to client ratio. We truly have the mission to serve only as a stepping stone to greater independence and have our clients move on to their own space to live and place of employment. We tirelessly give our best efforts every day to help integrate our clients into the community and overcome barriers of judgment. Inclusion is the ultimate goal and we know that the fear or lack of acceptance from others is more about lack of understanding about disabilities. Active community participation goes hand-in-hand with employment and moving out when it comes to priorities. Our clients engage with the community on a daily basis. When they move on from The Haase House on we look forward to them engaging as positive, contributing community members. We also follow them if they desire to continue their growth toward being independent. Our organization has been contemplating expansion and we have been encouraged by many advocates to do so. We have considered several areas in which we may grow including, but not limited to, a more expansive Supported Employment Program, a Recreation/Wellness Center and Program, a Group Home that Rocks and provides community integration, another Life Skills home for instruction, a small business to teach job skills or even providing support services within permanent affordable housing settings - all of which would strive for extensive community-integration. Haase Community Connections was created due to lack of services and supports in our area. We designed our model on the fact that each individual with a disability should have the opportunity to be a life-long learner and reach their potentials, whatever that may be for them. Parents and guardians worry what will happen to their adult child with a disabilty when they are gone or something happens to them. We hope we have brought them hope that there will be options for their adult children in the future.
