Mission Statement
The mission of the Sled is to assist low-income NYC Public School students and their families. Nearly 90% of the students we assist are homeless or temporarily housed, living in shelters or other doubled or tripled up with other extended family in temporary housing. We deliver individualized emergency assistance to children and families who are identified to us through school professionals. We also provide holiday cheer with our Sugarplum Sled Drive. Low income and housing-insecure students give us their gift wish and we fundraise to purchase, wrap and deliver over 1000 gifts each holiday season.
About This Cause
We provide food, household items, clothing and other tangible support to families with NYC public school children who are in temporary housing (i.e. in homeless shelters or doubled up with families) or transitioning to permanent housing. We also supervise a holiday toy drive wherein we solicit gifts for low income and housing-insecure students in NYC public schools. The four directors of the Sled volunteer their time, and the Sled's activities are funded by monetary and in- kind donations. The Sled spends about 1-2% of funds on administrative and web related costs to support fundraising. The rest of the funds (98-99%) all go directly to the low income, housing-insecure families supported by the Sled.
