Mission Statement
Milan CARES is a collaborative group composed of representatives from our local Milan Community School corporation, businesses, churches, Margaret Mary Health, and other community non profits in our area. Our vision is to create a strong community where our students thrive through tutoring and mentoring, families grow through supportive services needed during difficult seasons, and together we succeed.
About This Cause
Milan CARES was created in 2019 when our school system was overwhelmed with the many needs of our students who faced challenging circumstances within their homes. Over the past 10 years, Milan has seen its poverty level increase as well as an increase in drug use. Unfortunately, it is the youngest among us who endure the breakdown of the home. We know that learning does not stop when the dismissal bell rings and that our vulnerable students do not receive the learning support they need at home due to many circumstances, like work schedules, lack of understanding of learning needs, disinterest, or families struggling with mental health or substance abuse issues. In order to enhance the growth of our students, we have worked to build partnerships with our community, provide free tutoring services to selected students, and host family nights where community agencies are available to educate families about the resources that are available to them. Our robust after school tutoring program has grown to nearly 100 students being tutored Monday-Thursday through out the year. Next in January of 2023, we launched an in-school mentorship program for our high school students. This program focused on setting goals and how to make the right choices to achieve those goals. Our pilot group of 20 freshman (boys and girls) and 10 sophomores met weekly for 10 weeks. The response was great with students wanting to continue the program the fall 2023. As we meet the immediate needs of our students, the next step is to meet the needs of our families. We have many services available to families however none are within 30 minutes of driving or easily accessible. Many families are underserved due to access. The Brookings Institute on Poverty indicates that in order to sustain a middle-class existence, families must meet four needs: housing, education, vocation, and employment. Missing one of these factors increases the risk of failure by 87%. We as a community feel called to address the needs of our youth and families through a holistic, team approach. Our dream is to have a family resource center where students are supported through tutoring and mentorship programs, work and job skills training takes place, and families connect to service providers who assist and restore during difficult seasons of life.
