About This Cause

DeRose (DRB) serves Africans, immigrants, refugees, women, youths, and the homeless. We provide cultural specific women’s mental health program, this program fills a critical healthcare gap that is often overlooked when it comes to immigrants and refugees. For example, people of color face multiple psychosocial, economic, and cultural barriers that impede their access to health care services. Also, in Oregon, it is common knowledge that people of color don't often receive treatment from clinicians who share their cultural and linguistic backgrounds. Most immigrants don't feel they receive culturally appropriate care for even their basic healthcare needs. Research has shown that typical mental health outlook and intervention tend to focus and make diagnoses based on individual symptoms and behaviors that do not reflect most immigrants' culturally relevant practices. Instead, immigrants and refugees understand emotional difficulties, including depression and anxiety, as socio-moral problems more appropriate to bring to a family member, elders, spiritual or community leaders, or someone else familiar with the complex web of their social ties. People in most parts of the world do not view emotional problems as appropriate issues to discuss with health care providers. With this understanding, as certified Health educators, we have designed "evidence-based, tailored, refined and adaptive" mental health programs shown to reduce stress, improve general health, and are culturally and linguistically appropriate for our community. Our primary purpose is to build healthy communities by fostering emotionally healthy individuals for a better society. Considering the diversity of the African communities, we are aware that it is imperative that programs are acceptable, customizer and adapted to suit the cultural and religious beliefs of the different African communities. DRB'S At-Risk youth project is working to reduce the number of African youths and children on the street and among gangs. We are working on programs that will help engage At-risk youths and refocus their attention on productive activities that help them be responsible members of society. For example, we have carefully crafted volunteer experiences that will stretch youths out of their comfort zones and expose them to experiences that require thinking, building empathy, and reflecting. Our long-term goal is to create good citizens and global leaders who will make changes and help our community to thrive. Our organization prioritizes people of color women, who are low-income, disabled, and chronically underemployed. Our work is wrapped around the intersection of social justice, economic justice, sexism, and environmental justice as an organization. Our effort is to bring more understanding to the issues of social and economic justice and how they are interconnected. The De Rose Organization has seven board members, six collaborating partners, an Affiliation Agreement with the University of Portland Nursing department, and more than 24 volunteers.
