Mission Statement
Our mission is to strengthen America by providing examples of success stories, roadmaps, and resources to young Black Americans, so they can realize their dreams and more fully contribute to building our More Perfect Union.
About This Cause
Across all roles, Black Americans encounter gaps and barriers that limit their economic participation and prosperity. Closing the gaps could build a more dynamic and inclusive economy, foster economic mobility, and realize untapped human potential. Founded by Erwin Raphael, Tracy Raphael, and Richard Gilliam, The Lantern Network serves to inspire, guide, and propel underprivileged young Black Americans across the nation. Our mission is to encourage the next generation by exposing them the resources to discover their purpose, accomplish their dreams, and light a path forward. We believe that through bridging the gaps of economic and educational freedom, we can make the country more inclusive, competitive, and an enjoyable experience for all. The Lantern Network, also referred to as TLN, takes on the spirit of the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad inspired, guided, and propelled 100,000 enslaved men, women and children to freedom. We use this as our roadmap to build out our programs that we believe help to create pathways to economic freedom and success. Every day we work to launch the career of another young person, ensuring they not only have the resources but the understanding to move forward in the world. Through us providing our mentees with success stories, mentorship opportunities, internships, corporate partnerships, and workshops, we continue to impact the lives of young people daily. Strategic pillars Include: 1. Inspire passion and ignite the desire to start the journey by illuminating the many paths to Economic Freedom. 2. Guide the way by providing life skills, coaching and professional mentorship. 3. Propel life changing careers through engaged sponsorship and partnerships with forward thinking businesses and other organizations. These partners will benefit from the cognitive diversity and unique approaches to problem solving and strategic growth that are endemic to The Lantern Network and the youth they support. Simply put, we want to make our country and by extension the entire world, a more inclusive, competitive and fun place for all. The Lantern Network offers a series of programs designed in support of our three core pillars: inspire, guide, and propel. Our flagship program is our mentorship program. We pair a young person between the age of 18-25 with a professional in their desired fields. This program gives each mentee the opportunity to not only be inspired by their mentors, but to see how tangible their dreams are. We have helped over 100 people launch their careers, constantly propelling the next generation of professionals forward. Mentoring Matters! Mentoring Black youth has never been more important than it is today. In a recent survey over half (56%) of Black respondents could recall a time growing up when they wished they had a mentor but did not have one. Approximately 44% of Black youth faced barriers accessing mentors. The top barriers they faced were: • Not knowing how to find a mentor. • Not understanding what mentoring was or the value of having a mentor. • Parents not interested in them having a mentor According to the National Resource Mentoring Center, young adults with a Mentor are: • More likely to hold leadership positions • More confident in their abilities and have increased sense of pride and self-esteem Mentoring benefits: • academics • social-emotional well-being • mental health • preventing risky behaviors The Lantern Network’s Mentorship Program meets these needs. Our streaming stories program is a is a web series featuring successful Black Americans across an exceptionally wide spectrum of professional pursuits—from accountant to zoologist, and everyone in between. We interview black professionals on their journeys to success which helps to encourage our young people that they can do it too. We provide examples of perseverance, success, and freedom to everyone in our programs. The Lantern Network’s streaming content is instrumental in demonstrating how real people with real stories overcome obstacles and achieve personal goals. Through the sharing of these streaming stories, we wish to ignite a connection from the experience of others to young individuals, to help develop and propel them forward. The Entrepreneurship program covers the conception, design, organization, and management of new enterprises. The program is designed to take TLN mentees from opportunity identification through launch, growth, financing and profitability. With guidance from experienced, successful entrepreneurs, along with insights from start-up founders and financiers, TLN mentees will develop an entrepreneurial mindset and hone the skills they need to develop a new enterprise with potential for growth and funding, or to identify and pursue opportunities for growth within an existing organization. The Entrepreneurship Program gives TLN mentees the real-world knowledge they need to create and develop a new enterprise with potential for growth and funding, making it one of the best entrepreneurship certificate programs available. We want The Lantern Network to be the source of growth and development for young people but also a resource to organizations looking for talent. Vision: Our vision is a bold, strong, and united America where all people are valued by the content of their character and not the color of their skin. Our mission is to strengthen America by providing roadmaps and resources to young Black Americans, so they can realize their dreams and more fully contribute to building our More Perfect Union.
