Mission Statement

Of the 25% of women working in tech, Black and Hispanic women make up just 4% of that number. Through our fellowship, The WIT Project aims to build a pipeline for female-identifying college students from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds to enter the technology workforce and thrive there. During the academic year, we offer a fellowship program to college aged womxn. Our program focuses on developing a technical solution for a nonprofit while also providing training in software engineering and data science. These experiences in developing socially impactful software solutions empower our students with the skills needed to break down the barriers to becoming technology leaders.

About This Cause

Of the 25% of women working in tech, Black and LatinX women make up just 4% of that number. Our goal is to increase the representation of ethnically and economically diverse individuals in the tech workforce. This problem is a personal one for us, in becoming women in technology we saw opportunities to address the challenges minority groups face in building their technology careers. Despite efforts to address the diversity gap in the tech workforce through ongoing initiatives in education systems and industry spaces, the opportunity gap for underrepresented women is still widening at an exponential rate. There’s also a unique problem in the nonprofit space where organizations often lack access, resources, and experience to harness the technology solutions to better address their goals. 80% of non-profit leaders agree they need to change technology practices to make greater societal gains. We see an opportunity to bridge the gaps both of these groups face through our fellowship pipeline. All of our fundraising efforts are centered around raising funds to pay our fellows stipends. These stipends will provide our students with the opportunity to experience the 24-week program without financial burden. We believe this is especially important given the social-economic background of our student body.
