Student LunchBox (SLB) is a nonprofit charitable organization committed to fighting food insecurity among college students. SLB participates in efforts to rescue and recover food and other essentials for economically disadvantaged college students to reduce the hardships of hunger and foster academic success. By addressing the pivotal challenge of food and financial insecurity, SLB empowers students to achieve their academic goals, unlock their full potential, and successfully graduate from their educational journey.
About This Cause
Student LunchBox provides vital resources to economically disadvantaged college students across Los Angeles County. It addresses the widespread college hunger crisis by providing nutritious meals and other necessities, enabling students to focus on their education and achieve their full academic potential. In California's higher education system, college food insecurity rates have surged from 39% in 2022 to 66% in 2023. Today, the crisis persists, with more than one in three students struggling to afford meals. We witness this reality daily through our operations, where endless lines of students waiting for food assistance have resulted in 154,249 visits in 2024—a stark reminder that campus hunger extends beyond statistics — a daily struggle for thousands. While campus resources remain limited and food waste persists, SLB bridges this gap through innovative food rescue efforts and a range of essential resources, ensuring students have access to comprehensive basic needs support, fostering their well-being, and empowering their academic success. Student LunchBox's proven leadership in addressing campus hunger has positioned us as a model for sustainable impact across higher education. Partnerships with major colleges and universities in Los Angeles County enable us to serve over 4,000 students monthly, providing them with vital sustenance, including fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a wide range of grocery items tailored to their immediate nutritional needs. SLB also offers essential toiletries, hygiene kits, clothing, and bedding, which contribute to students’ overall well-being, enabling them to thrive academically and personally. This strategic alliance has firmly established SLB as a leader in the fight against campus hunger. With a commitment to sustainability, reducing food waste, and providing comprehensive support services, SLB demonstrates a holistic approach to student success, addressing not only immediate nutritional needs but also the long-term well-being of students. By integrating food security with educational empowerment and community engagement, SLB continues to create a lasting impact on campuses and set a national standard for basic needs support in higher education.
