Mission Statement
More Than A Village is a 501(c)(3) certified non-profit organization that provides birthday gifts, holiday gifts, and school supplies to children of HBCU bandsmen that have passed away.
About This Cause
HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) have a stronger cultural bond than most colleges. HBCU band culture is at the center of that cultural bond. From showing up 2 weeks earlier than everyone on campus to spending every night and weekend together on the field every fall semester year after year, HBCU bandsmen dedicate a large portion of our college career to bringing pride and joy to their alma mater. We grow together as adults, as students, and as musicians. We are a family as strong as any other. As alumni of Alabama State University, naturally that became our pilot school. In recent years, we have lost many Mighty Marching Hornet band members, both young and old. Whilst each loss is significant, the loss of those that were parents is even more monumental. It is crucial for the band to come together in support of those children who have lost parents because they are unable to help themselves. Our fallen band mates dedicated a substantial portion of their college careers to the Mighty Marching Hornets and we owe it to them to honor their sacrifice. Their children may still have a remaining parent, grandparents, and other family but we know that it can take more than a village to raise a child. Our band is not the only HBCU band out there with that same familial bond. Our dream is for this program to grow and spread across the HBCU band community, covering all of those children in love and support. If you are reading this, you can be a part of that dream.
