About This Cause

The Story of Black Coffee Northwest: A Legacy of Resilience and Community Hello everyone, I am Darnesha, and I want to share with you the journey of Black Coffee Northwest, a story of resilience and community. Founding the Dream Black Coffee Northwest began with a shared dream between my daughter and me. We envisioned more than just a coffee shop – we wanted to create a space that would uplift and empower our community, while also building generational wealth. Our mission was clear from the start: to leave a lasting legacy that celebrates and supports the Black community. Overcoming Challenges Our journey hasn’t been easy. From dealing with hostile landlords to facing multiple break-ins and even surviving an arson attempt, we encountered numerous obstacles that could have derailed our dreams. Despite these challenges, we refused to give up. We kept our doors open, determined to provide a safe haven for our customers and a hub for community engagement. Persistence and Consistency Throughout it all, persistence and consistency have been our guiding principles. We understood that our fight was not just for our business but for the entire community we serve. We’ve maintained a steadfast commitment to our mission, despite the setbacks, and our community has rallied around us, offering unwavering support. Building a Community At Black Coffee Northwest, we are more than a coffee shop – we are a platform for community organizing and empowerment. We take pride in being the first employer for many youth in our neighborhood, offering them not just jobs but also mentorship and skills training. It’s our way of investing in the next generation of leaders. Expanding to the Central District Now, we are excited to share that we are working tirelessly to open a new location in the Central District of Seattle. This move holds special significance for us. The Central District has a rich history rooted in diverse communities, including Seattle’s African American community. Opening our doors in this historic neighborhood is a testament to our commitment to preserving its cultural heritage and providing a gathering place for all. Staff Retention and Growth I am proud to say that we have retained our dedicated team since the beginning, and we are planning to double our staff as we expand into the Central District. This growth not only supports our business but also creates more job opportunities within our community, contributing to its economic vitality. Looking Ahead As I reflect on our journey, I am filled with gratitude for our community’s support and inspired by the resilience we’ve shown together. Black Coffee Northwest is more than a business; it’s a movement driven by a passion for community and a belief in the power of perseverance.
