About This Cause

Gotham Food Pantry is a New York City-based nonprofit organization advancing food justice by rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to communities facing food insecurity. Gotham partners with tenant associations, food retailers, mutual aid groups, and local organizations to establish and support community-led food distribution hubs—primarily within NYCHA public housing complexes. Through its innovative, tenant-centered model, Gotham recovers high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste and ensures it reaches families in need. Since it's founding in 2020, Gotham has rescued and distributed over 10 million pounds of nutritious food, providing free groceries to more than 400,000 New Yorkers. The organization also develops leadership training for residents, hosts wellness events, and advocates for policies that support sustainable, equitable food systems. With a focus on dignity, collaboration, and environmental impact, Gotham Food Pantry strives to make food security a way of life in New York City.
