Mission Statement
Walk. Talk. Listen. Learn. Talk A Mile connects young Black leaders with local police trainees to improve the community one conversation and one mile at a time.
About This Cause
We hear a lot these days about the need for more conversations, empathy and understanding when it comes to reimagining public safety in the United States so that we can achieve lasting change. But who should have those conversations that lead to positive change, particularly within the Black community? Elected officials? Community leaders? Advocates? Voters? Allies? If we had to pick who we’d like to have those conversations, whose faces are seen, voices are heard, and most importantly, who will take words and turn them into action…we believe it is young people. Black students are about to go out into the world – some off to college, some joining the workforce – continuing to grow as leaders in their community. Police trainees are on the cusp of serving our community, potentially for decades long careers. What better time to get them together than now, at this pivotal moment in their lives – as they begin to serve and lead this community? To that end, Talk A Mile elevates young Black leaders by connecting them with new officers in training. As they walk, conversations create empathy and understanding leading to positive change and building trust. Talk A Mile meets at a local track and pairs people up. They walk four laps together while sharing each other’s story, building relationships and trust. Insightful conversation prompts are provided each lap, and the conversations continue after the walk. We also provide opportunities for reflection, feedback and next steps via surveys, debriefs and, in the future, participant “alumni” events. We measure impact through participation, sentiment (such as students feeling seen and heard), likelihood to recommend the experience to peers, and percentage of officers reached within a department. We intend to expand the program to more schools in Portland, Oregon where we are based, and scale to additional metro areas across the country. We’d love your support, so that we can quite literally take the first steps with this approach to help our communities to thrive.
