Mission Statement

MUSE (Mentorship for Underrepresented STEM Enthusiasts) is an online mentorship platform that offers mentorship to and from underrepresented individuals in STEM fields. We aim to provide representation, mentorship, & support for underrepresented students by: 1. Connecting underrepresented students to underrepresented STEM professionals who can work with students long-term to successfully navigate higher education. 2. Posting monthly interviews with underrepresented STEM professionals on our website and offering monthly community check ins for community building and increased representation and sense of belonging. 3. Offering fellowships, awards and compensation to underrepresented students, MUSE mentees, and MUSE mentors to set a precedent that this work is valuable and deserving of compensation. 4. Partnering with universities and organizations to set up mentorship programs and increase representative mentorship in STEM across the United States. 5. Amplifying helpful resources, organizations and sites which center and serve underrepresented STEM students.

About This Cause

We offer representation and mentorship as valuable resources for the success of underrepresented students in STEM fields. With our online platform, we facilitate one-on-one mentorship for underrepresented scholars with mentors who also share underrepresented identities. Data from the National Science Foundation show that underrepresented groups (defined as those who are underrepresented in STEM fields relative to their national population) are severely underrepresented at the college, graduate, and faculty level, receive lower pay than their overrepresented peers in STEM and face additional hardships in higher education. The literature suggests that mentorship and representation are valuable resources for the success and retention of underrepresented students in STEM. Additionally, MUSE understands that efforts to diversify our STEM fields have often been born from our most marginalized. We set a precedent to reward and value efforts to diversify our institutions by providing fellowships for our mentors for their mentorship efforts as well as funding awards for MUSE mentees. At MUSE, we strive to serve those who self identify as underrepresented students in the United States seeking mentorship in STEM fields. This includes those who identify as Indigenous, Black, Hispanic and/or Latinx, Alaskan Native, Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander scholars and their intersecting identities. We recognize the additional burden that underrepresented people of color face who also have intersecting marginalized identities. We will also evaluate white and overrepresented Asian students with marginalized, underrepresented or disadvantaged identities (e.g. Disabled, Trans, Nonbinary, first generation, etc.)
