Mission Statement

Pittsburgh National Youth Boxing is a non-profit organization working with under-resourced youth in the Pittsburgh community (ages 8-18) by training young people to box. The sport of boxing teaches hard work, discipline, dedication, accountability, respect and loyalty. Our dedicated staff works in connection with the City of Pittsburgh Police and our goal is to provide support and resources to these young people so they can perform at their highest potential in all they do. Our primary goal is to achieve a 100% high school graduation rate and eventual college or trade school placement. Subsequent goals include creating a competitive yet professional sporting experience which includes regional, state, national or global exposure. We seek mentors in the community that are dedicated to our participants and are committed to their role-model example of education, employment, community involvement and a focus on the future.

About This Cause

Our program started in 2014 with a grass roots approach, but we did not incorporate until October 2020. Coach James Hoy was tapped to oversee and grow a very small boxing organization. Since that time, the number of participants has grown from 8 to 46. In those early days, there was not a cadence of events or even a regular slate of boxers to work with. Under Coach Hoy’s leadership, this program has grown to serve an ever increasing number of under resourced Pittsburgh youth and achieve national notoriety. We are proud to say that we obtained two gold medals at the USA Boxing Junior Olympics this past July. The physically and mentally challenging sport of boxing requires daily practices, dedicated coaches, and a commitment by the boxers to health and wellness. The program provides a safe space for our young men and women to learn the sport and techniques and bond with their boxing family. The sport of boxing helps address anger management, build confidence, and refine mental and physical agility. The Pittsburgh National Youth Boxing program is located at the 3rd Ave Gym, Pittsburgh, PA 15219, and currently supports 46 boxers with a coaching staff of four volunteers. The demographic profile includes approximately 83% African American, 11% White, 4% Hispanic, and 2% Pacific Islander. Their ages range from 8-19 and are 98% male and 2% female. We anticipate additional growth of our female population as our lone female boxer gains more exposure and notoriety. In their off time, the boxers learn to train others in the art of boxing, cook, and participate in skilled labor programs learning carpentry, painting, drywall, plumbing, electrical and landscaping. We are in contact with their parents and teachers, and we provide help with school supplies and career counseling. When the boxers travel to events, they are learning not only how to compete on a larger platform, but how to conduct themselves with pride and professionalism that is gained by the mentorship and demonstration of their coaches and role models. This program began at a basic level to offer training and mentorship, and because of the enthusiasm and dedication of the coaches and the commitment by the boxers, they have progressed to a level of national recognition. Overall needs include funding to provide gym equipment for training, including individual equipment such as gloves and shoes plus general equipment such as treadmills., sparring bars, weights, etc. There are annual USA Boxing dues for all boxers and volunteer coaches. We take the boxers to spar at other gyms as well as competitions in and out of Pennsylvania. Significant costs are incurred for these experiences.
