Mission Statement

With climate resilience, soil regeneration, and environmental justice as a guide, Build Soil inspires people to participate in the equitable design and planning of landscapes and food systems so that work, sustenance, and the places we live help meet local needs and empower communities.

About This Cause

Build Soil works with communties to improve their ecological resilience and their capacity to respond to climate change. Organization organizes both online through website, social media, and Discord as well as in person through tree planting and soil-building efforts. Since 2019, the organization has offered instruction, consulting, and guidance in the design of landscapes and has directly planted and distributed 10,000 edible chestnut trees. Build Soil's flagship project is an effort to encourage the planting of one million edible mixed-species chestnuts to provide a basis for community food system. Many thousands more have been planted globally through the extended network of individual's and organizations inspired by the project. Future projects include the expanding from chestnut planting to other efforts for climate response including, the design of ponds and water collection for drought mitigation, soil building through urban design, and strategic migration of plant communities threated by changing climatic conditions.
