Mission Statement

Onaketa provides free online tutoring to underserved black and brown youth. We specialize in science and math, and we serve students in middle school, high school, and college. At Onaketa, our vision is for all historically underserved youth to receive the resources and help they need to succeed in school and reach their academic goals, and to receive the support, protection, guidance, and love necessary to grow into their full potential.

About This Cause

Founded by Dr. Nia Imara in 2020, Onaketa is a social justice organization that develops the skills, self-esteem and leadership capacity to empower students and parents. Onaketa aims to reach underserved, underrepresented minority (URM) students in 5th – 12th grade, as well as underserved URM college undergraduates. Students are provided with increased educational opportunities and enhances their overall educational experience. Onaketa services will lead to improved academic performance for our students, as well as increased confidence. Ultimately, our goal is to help increased numbers of URM youth in America to survive and thrive academically and in life. Onaketa is an organization dedicated to providing free online tutoring to Black and Brown students from underserved communities. We specialize in science and math, and we serve students in middle school, high school, and college. Since founding Onaketa in 2020, we have been in discussion with the people we aim to serve, including educators, parents, and guardians of underserved students of color, as well as students themselves. Each student’s tutoring program is individualized. We meet with the parent/guardian and/or student to discuss their needs and goals, and we formulate a plan. We match students with a tutor, who they will meet with on a regular (typically weekly) basis, for a determined length of time (e.g., one semester). Private tutoring has been shown to be a critical factor in the educational lives of students. While in-person tutoring has been the traditional option sought by schools and families seeking to help their students, the demand for virtual learning services is at an all-time high, and the online tutoring industry is growing rapidly. Under-resourced students, however, tend to have limited access to quality private tutoring. In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, with school shutdowns in the US affecting more than 50 million students, the demand for online tutoring services among all demographics will only increase. Now more than ever, it is vitally important that low-income, URM students are given special attention and provided with the very best resources to safeguard their educations. There are several factors that makes Onaketa unique: (1) First, there is NO online tutoring service which provides entirely free tutoring to our demographic. (2) Moreover, there is NO current online tutoring service that focuses on STEM subjects for underserved students. (3) In addition to providing the highest quality tutors (i.e., undergraduates or college graduates with STEM degrees), Onaketa will require our tutors to undergo training in culturally competency, and many of the tutors will be underrepresented minorities themselves.
