About This Cause
At Phoenix Children's Hospital, each day we are entrusted to care for sick and injured children from throughout Arizona and the Southwest. Their families look to us for hope and healing, to improve – and sometimes save – their child’s life. While much of what we do is similar on the surface to an adult hospital – heal broken bones, treat cancer, perform surgeries – Phoenix Children's Hospital is just for children, ensuring that each staff member is specially trained and focused only on pediatrics. Radiology staff knows how to calm wiggly children for x-rays. Pharmacy systems are setup to alarm if an unusual pediatric dosage is ordered. Staff is trained to recognize and alleviate pain in patients too young to verbalize their discomfort. Children are not just small adults. Their bodies and medical needs are different. And so are we. Phoenix Children's is Arizona’s only licensed children’s hospital and one of the largest in the country. Within a five year period, one in four children in Arizona will have received care from a Phoenix Children’s provider. Last year, Phoenix Children’s had 18,286 inpatient admissions; 78,612 visits to the Emergency Department; 216,241 outpatient visits; and 16,227 surgical procedures. But we aren’t only one of the largest children’s hospitals; we are one of the best. U.S. News & World Report honored four Phoenix Children’s Hospital programs in their Best Children’s Hospital rankings for 2014-2015: Cardiology/Cardiothoracic Surgery, Oncology, Neurosurgery/Neurology and Orthopaedics. Offering world-class care in more than 75 subspecialty fields of pediatric medicine, Phoenix Children's Hospital has six Centers of Excellence: Children’s Heart Center; Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital; Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders; Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics; Pediatric Trauma Center; and Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Children’s Heart Center The Children’s Heart Center provides the Valley’s only pediatric heart transplant program and conducts about one heart transplant each month. The Center also provides cardiac intensive care, management of congenital heart defects, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac catheterization, an Adult Congenital Heart Program and cardiodiagnostic evalutions. Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital The Barrow Neurological Institute at Phoenix Children's Hospital is working with the School of Biological and Health Systems Engineering at Arizona State University to seek a cure for malignant brain tumors. Barrow at Phoenix Children’s is the largest pediatric neuroscience center in the Southwest and one of the few hospitals to offer pediatric neurological diagnosis, neurosurgery and rehabilitation in one central location. Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders treats about 300 new cancer patients each year. Nearly 80 percent of them will survive cancer (a 20 to 30 percent higher survival rate than for adults), with some forms leukemia having a greater than 90 percent survival rate. Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics The Center for Pediatric Orthopaedics is the sixth-largest program of its kind in the U.S. Thanks to a generous gift from PGA Tour Professional Bubba Watson and golf club manufacturer Ping, we will soon construct a state-of-the-art gait and motion analysis lab that will open next year. Pediatric Trauma Center Phoenix Children’s has the state’s only Verified Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and one of only 35 such centers in the country. In 2013 Phoenix Children’s treated 2,380 total trauma patients, making it one of the busiest pediatric trauma centers in the nation. Newborn Intensive Care Unit Phoenix Children’s Newborn Intensive Care Unit cares for the Hospitals tiniest and most fragile patients. The NICU is home to Arizona’s only Neuro-NICU, the second of just a handful built in the entire country to care for infants who have experienced birth-related brain injuries. Did you know? • Phoenix Children’s offers inpatient care at Mercy Gilbert and specialty and urgent care in Avondale, Glendale, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Yuma. • In 2012 Phoenix Children's established the Ronald A. Matricaria Institute of Molecular Medicine, which will help us personalize medicine based on a child’s DNA – and lead to better treatments for kids with cancer. • Our Child Life program helps patients of all ages – and their families – develop ways to cope with fear, anxiety and separation from home and school. • Phoenix Children’s provides community outreach programs that reach hundreds of thousands of families each year. Programs include injury prevention, water safety, car and booster seat safety, mobile medical care for at-risk neighborhoods, child abuse prevention and fire safety. • More than 50 dogs and one cat make their rounds at Phoenix Children’s as a part of the PetSmart Paws Can Heal Animal-Assisted Therapy Program. • Each year more than 500 people volunteer their time and talents to Phoenix Children’s, logging more than 53,000 hours. • More than 60 programs are funded entirely or mostly through philanthropic efforts, including: • 1 Darn Cool School • Animal-Assisted Therapy • Bill Holt Pediatric HIV Clinic • Breathmobile • Camp Maska and Camp Rainbow • Child Abuse Prevention • Child Life • Crews'n Healthmobile mobile medical unit • Drowning Prevention • Helmet Education • Injury Prevention • Pastoral Care
