Mission Statement
We put volunteers to work in the community where they are needed most.
About This Cause
At HandsOn Greater Phoenix (HandsOn) we envision a day in which all people realize their power to make a difference and are actively engaged in their communities. To realize this, we actively pursue our mission to put volunteers to work where they are needed most in our community. Our staff coordinates and manages hands-on volunteer projects in collaboration with more than 400 community service organizations, neighborhood associations, and schools throughout Maricopa County. Since our inception over 25 years ago, HandsOn has grown from 150 to more than 27,000 volunteers who contribute more than 70,000 hours of time and complete 1,500+ community service projects each year. We serve all segments of the population in Maricopa County. Key HandsOn programs include: • Your Experience Counts: Our signature academic tutoring program that places Boomer-aged volunteers in four local school districts to help K-8 grade students gain proficiency in the areas of reading, writing, math and science. • Calendar Projects: Through partnerships with local nonprofits, HandsOn manages flexible volunteer projects on an ongoing basis and staffs these projects with responsible volunteer groups or individuals. Each month, we offer 60 volunteer opportunities addressing critical community needs. • Special Days of Service: Each year, HandsOn hosts several large days of service including our Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, Serve A Thon, and 9/11 Day of Service. These events engage thousands of volunteers in hands-on service projects throughout the Valley. • AmeriCorps VISTA: Members of the HandsOn VISTA (Volunteers In Service To America) team dedicate a year of their lives to serving full-time in nonprofits and government agencies. During their term of service, VISTAs build the capacity of organizations established to alleviate poverty by developing sustainable programs in fundraising, volunteer coordination and project management. • Disaster Response: We hold disaster related trainings to local communities across Arizona on how to utilize volunteers during times of disaster.
