Mission Statement
At ICAN, we provide access to out-of-school time opportunities that empower all youth and their families to pursue what is most meaningful to them.
About This Cause
Currently in Arizona, there are nearly half a million youth who live in communities where out-of-school time programs are not accessible. ICAN exists to close that gap. Our mission is to provide access to out-of-school time opportunities that empower all youth and their families to pursue what is most meaningful to them. We provide this at no-cost to our families, making ICAN one of only a handful of programs like this in the country. We specifically work with school-aged children from underserved communities across Arizona, prioritizing those receiving Free & Reduced-Price School Lunches. Our award-winning, year-round program provides a safe, engaging environment where youth explore experiential learning and self-discovery, building a strong foundation for their future. Guided by a holistic approach, we help young people thrive academically, socially, and creatively through four interconnected pillars: academic support, positive youth development, enrichment and future readiness, and community and family support. ICAN’s comprehensive program was founded by Henry Salinas, a caring and concerned citizen in Chandler, Arizona who witnessed gang violence overtaking his neighborhood and decided to do something about it. He founded ICAN in 1991 in order to help youth in his community receive support, develop healthy skills and behaviors, and improve their well-being. Henry’s initial investment of time and compassion blossomed into a full-service youth center that grew into what ICAN is today. Henry’s commitment to keep ICAN free in order to serve those who needed it most continues to impact the families we serve today. Today, ICAN serves over 700 youth annually across five program sites in Chandler and Mesa.
