Mission Statement

The mission of Sharing Down Syndrome Arizona is to educate and empower but especially give hope to families who love a child with Down syndrome. We promote positive acceptance and understanding and inclusion is embraced by all as we celebrate each life.

About This Cause

Since 1991, "Sharing" has been there for parents who have just learned about their baby's diagnosis and we are there for them as each chapter of their life moves forward. Our monthly parent meetings address topics specific to Down syndrome educationally, medically, and emotionally. We help parents learn to become outspoken advocates for their children. Our social events provide an opportunity for parents to include their families on this wonderful journey. Our parent support is provided by seasoned parents who have "been there." We share the joys and the unique challenges that come when we love a child with Down syndrome. We believe that all children with Down syndrome deserve a high quality of life. Our society has come a long way since children with disabilities were routinely sent to vie in an institution but we have a long way to go so that people who have Down syndrome can feel they are welcomed into our world. We provide New Parent Welcome folders to all birthing hospitals and we personally visit each new family to help them in their journey. Our mission is to positive acceptance and inclusion for all. We help families register with DDD (Division of Developmental Disabilities) and AZiep (Arizona Early Intervention Program) so their child can reach developmental milestones. Each activity has been created to uplift and bring our community together. We provide educational advocacy and legal referrals for those in need, and we assist with fundraising for people with economic challenges raising a child with Down syndrome. Every year we speak at Mayo Clinic to medical students and at ASU (Arizona State University). Our panel of self-advocates and their mothers share so they can learn firsthand how wonderful people with Down syndrome are. Two quotes we live by are these, "I will act as though what I do makes a difference." ~Ben Franklin and "We worry about what a child will be tomorrow, yet we forget that he is already someone today." ~Stacia Tauscher We recognize that Down syndrome is the most common genetic anomaly where one in every 691 babies will have this disability. The cause is unknown. We are thankful we have our children who remind us what matters most in life.
