About This Cause
Nogales Community Development (NCD) is a 501c3 organization with 17 years of experience providing and coordinating community and economic development projects and services in Santa Cruz County, AZ. A decade ago, Nogales Community Development (NCD) was known as Historic Nogales Main Street, a grassroots organization comprised of downtown merchants and property owners. Our primary goal was to revitalize and introduce diversity to downtown Nogales. We realized that to achieve our goals, we also needed to create more opportunities for small businesses and enhance the lives of residents living in downtown Nogales and throughout Santa Cruz County. Today, NCD supports a comprehensive, incremental approach to creating long-term economic growth through community development while preserving the unique heritage, culture and attributes of Nogales and Santa Cruz County. Our mission is to build thriving communities in Nogales and Santa Cruz County - one business, one person at a time - by providing project management for commercial revitalization, business support for entrepreneurs, asset development for individuals and affordable housing for families and individuals. A brief description of our programs includes: Business Services: NCD’s business service goals are to strengthen our community’s economic base by creating more jobs and helping more individuals and families realize economic self-sufficiency. NCD provides relevant and practical business training on Quick Books, Social Media, Customer Service, Defining Business Success, Getting Your Business Loan Ready, Business Development, E-marketing and more. NCD’s staff is certified to teach NxLevel Entrepreneurial Training, a nationally recognized course that teaches new business owners about building a business plan and starting and sustaining a business. The course is 20 hours long and is taught over a 2-week period. NCD provides small businesses and entrepreneurs with access to technical assistance and capital with small business loans ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 at affordable rates. Since starting our loan program in 2007, NCD has loaned $1,102,500 to 24 small businesses and entrepreneurs. Asset Development for Families and Individuals: NCD’s asset development programs include Individual Development Accounts where participants can realize a 2:1 match on their savings. For every one dollar that a person saves, Nogales Community Development will match it with two dollars up to a total of $4,000. The savings must be applied towards purchasing a home, starting a business or pursuing a post-secondary education. Through a grant funded by Housing and Urban Development (HUD), NCD launched a neighborhood stabilization program in downtown Nogales neighborhoods that involves community outreach, homeownership education, job training and the rehabilitation of five homes. NCD is a HUD certified housing counseling agency and has been providing foreclosure assistance, financial literacy and pre-purchase counseling to Santa Cruz County residents since 2007. In partnership with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and several public and private organizations NCD established the Frontera Nogales VITA & Asset Building Coalition to provide residents with income tax preparation assistance at no cost as well as access to various resources. Farmer’s Market & Commercial Kitchen: In 2007, NCD built the “Little Mercado”, an outdoor food court area that has served as a launching pad for multiple food-related businesses. It has also housed Nogales’ first Farmer’s Market, which was founded by NCD, in collaboration with Mariposa Community Health Center in April 2012. In 2013, with the assistance of NALCAB, NCD submitted and was awarded a Health and Human Services Community and Economic Development (CED) grant to support the creation and expansion of food-related businesses in Santa Cruz County.
