Mission Statement
The Phoenix Conservatory of Music’s mission is to unleash the power of music by providing high quality music education and experiences to students and families that is affordable and accessible. We fill our mission by providing community education programs and classes, after school programs for at risk populations, private music lessons, ensembles and a unique college preparatory program in affiliation with the Berklee City Music Network.
About This Cause
It is our vision to be a leader in music education (with a focus in popular and commercial music) in order to foster Creative Youth Development in the Greater Phoenix Area and beyond. Values: Community: We foster a sense of community in a safe, inclusive, and nurturing environment. Education: We strive for excellence in our teaching by being compassionate and respectful mentors to all students. Accessibility: We provide accessible student-centered opportunities and experiences that influence and support our diverse culture. Empowerment: We empower our students to meet their full expressive potential. Character: We model respect, kindness, and integrity in our community of practice. Need: Research indicates that access to quality arts programs supports academic success of at-risk students (Music Matters, 2018). Unfortunately, in AZ, many students—especially those from low-income areas—do not have access to quality arts programs. According to the Arts Education Census Explorer for 2019-2020 (https://azarts.gov/azartsed-explorer/), only 67% of Arizona students are receiving arts education. In our county specifically only 60% of students are enrolled in music courses. This number is anticipated to drop dramatically in the 2020-2021 with schools going online or hybrid in response to COVID-19. Without a pandemic, the lowest participation rates are Mid-High Poverty Schools, Charter Schools, and High Schools. With the gap in technology facing low-income students, the number of low-income families who did not have access to quality after school or music programing during the pandemic has grown exponentially. In 2021 the Arizona Department of Education, in response to COVID and school shutdowns, stated local recovery highest priority needs have been identified as students from low-income families. Many of these students are seeing up to a 30% loss of their annual gain in reading and up to a 50% loss in math because of the disruption of in person learning. Kindergarten enrollment has dropped, creating missed opportunities for learning foundation skills in reading and math, developing social and emotional skill sets. The Evidence Base for Summer Enrichment and Comprehensive Afterschool Opportunities, a “substantial body of research has documented the role of comprehensive afterschool programs as supports for a variety of important student results and outcomes”. These outcomes are accelerated student achievement and development in school grades, positive social behaviors and increased engagement and attendance. According to the National Association for Music Education: On the 2012 SAT, students who participated in music scored an average of 31 points above average in reading, 23 points above average in math, and 31 points above average in writing. College Board SAT, 2012 College-Bound Seniors: Total Group Profile Report. (See table 18.) First- graders who participated in special music classes as part of an arts study saw their reading skills and math proficiency increase dramatically. Gardiner, M. F., Fox, A., Knowles, F., & Jeffrey, D. (1996). Learning improved by arts training. Nature, 381(6580), 284-284. According to workforce.org: “Low socioeconomic status students with a high participation in the arts [both in school and after school] have a dropout rate of 4%. But their peers with low participation in the arts have a drop out rate of 22%. Students…are 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement and 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance.” Especially now, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, students need programs that can engage them and keep them being connected with their peers, teachers and community. At the start of the pandemic, our program was able to quickly pivot and continue to provide these transformational programs without a pause in programming and continued to serve students and provide them with quality music education and social and emotional learning that will help to keep them connected and engaged during a time of isolation, distancing and disconnectedness. History: Founded in 1998, PCM has provided high quality music education for over 11,000 students in the last 24 years. Our program models are based off industry best practices, which have been successfully integrated to create unique programs that are locally and nationally recognized for their excellence. Locally, PCM was recognized as a 2017 Phoenix Mayor’s Arts Award Winner, and a 2015 Governor’s Arts Award Winner for Arts Education Organization of the year. Nationally, PCM’s College Preparatory Program won a 2017 National Arts and Humanities Youth Program Award. PCM has also been recognized as a grantee and partner of the Country Music Awards Foundation—receiving funding as well opportunities for students to participate in music events around the country. We are also the only organization is Arizona that is a member of Berklee College of Music’s City Music Network—which provides access to nationally renowned curriculum and many prestigious opportunities for students. PCM’s programs are based on the Youth Development through Music model, which utilizes engagement in the arts to generate positive outcomes, such as increased academic achievement, graduation rates, and college enrollment. Utilizing an exemplary roster of teaching artists and staff, we fulfill our mission and goals through a combination of early childhood program, community/afterschool programs, school music program capacity building, educator professional development, group music classes and summer camps, private music lessons, ensemble development, and our College Preparatory Program. A major highlight in the growth of the organization occurred in 2010 as PCM was selected by Berklee College of Music in Boston as part of the Berklee City Music Network. As the only Berklee partner in Arizona, the affiliation provides PCM students the opportunity to engage with the most prestigious music learning institution in the U.S. It exposes them to scholarship opportunities for summer camps and tuition. Demonstrating sustainability and success, PCM relocated in the summer of 2020 to a larger space with a performing center located in the arts district near downtown Phoenix with convenient freeway access for classes, lessons, and performances for aspiring musicians. In addition to having new, more appropriate space, PCM has expanded its online platform to include synchronous private music lessons, group classes, professional development for music educators and teaching artists, ensembles, and classes. PCM provides a continuum of high-quality music education and experiences to hundreds of students annually, with programs from introductory level in-house education programs and after school programs to more advanced private lessons and the most prestigious College Prep Program for contemporary music education in the state: The Berklee College of Music’s City Music Network and PULSE programs. They receive contributed income to make sure that all students have access to music education, regardless of their socio-economic status and is a AZ State Qualifying Tax Credit Organization. With a mission is to unleash the power of music by providing high quality music education and experiences to students and families that is affordable and accessible, PCM is helping over 2,000 students each year realize their dreams. Our vision is to empower youth with opportunities to express themselves, transform their skills, and be inspired to pursue future endeavors in music education and careers. By helping students overcome barriers such as low family income and lack of access to musical arts programs at school, PCM ignites passion and builds knowledge in young people to help them develop solid pathways to competitive, merit-based higher education programs.
