Mission Statement
Our mission at Rickshaw Film Foundation is to amplify South Asian voices and stories within the film industry through community engagement, mentorship, and grant opportunities — inspiring a new generation of filmmakers in America and highlighting the values, traditions, and lifestyles of our rich cultural perspective.
About This Cause
Over the last three years, Rickshaw has focused heavily on artist development and talent incubation to foster a robust community of talented writers, directors, and producers. This community represents a new generation of diverse storytellers in the Western Film & TV industry. The journey began with our first incubator program, The Writer’s Room, in which selected writers went from a story idea to a first draft of their screenplay over the course of 10 weeks. We later expanded into other programs including The Director’s Circle, The Producer’s Network, and The Alumni Room. This cycle, now our 4th cycle of programs, we are also introducing our first mentorship program in partnership with the South Asian Writers Committee, a group of experienced South Asian screenwriters who are members of the Writers Guild of America (WGA). These programs are our core offerings at Rickshaw, but we have many other ways for people to get involved. We frequently host panel discussions, fireside chats, in-person events, and virtual meetups to continue building community and deepening bonds between our members. Online, we offer The Rickshaw Rolodex, a database for creatives to find and collaborate with one another. We also contentiously amplify successes for South Asian voices and stories by sharing them on our Instagram and as part of our quarterly Newsletters. Something that has been important to us since our beginning is to not only serve and amplify the South Asian diaspora in the US, but also the South Asian diaspora and its creatives all over the world. This allows the creatives in our community to learn from one another and various industries on a global level, essentially finding opportunities in places never thought to be possible. In the spirit of community over competition, we often highlight our brothers and sisters throughout the AAPI community. As we grow, we want to do more and win together.
