Mission Statement
The purpose of the W.O.R.K.S. is to bring dignity and hope to a growing population of individuals consisting of the hungry and homeless in Oakland. This marginalized population, which is comprised of individuals of all ages, races and ethnicities, are generally in poor health and have inadequate healthcare resources. As a result, these individuals are at increased risk of developing severe illness from contracting the COVID-19 virus and its variants because of the following pre-conditions: cancer, kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, an immunocompromised state, obesity, sickle cell disease, smoking, poor diet, hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In addition, individuals in this population are at-risk of developing severe mental illness or chemical dependence, and are more likely to have experienced physical, emotional and sexual abuse, domestic violence and other unreported trauma.
