Mission Statement
Our mission is to connect people to rivers through hands-on action and education to make a positive, lasting impact on river conservation.
About This Cause
Conservation: Protect Our Rivers hosts and organizes river cleanup events across the U.S. River cleanups are ways people can experience and learn firsthand about the problems threatening rivers and contribute to protecting them. Protect Our Rivers also empowers people to lead cleanup events in their own communities by providing them with toolkits and resources to do so safely. From February to November 2021, Protect Our Rivers planned and hosted 28 cleanup projects across 8 waterways in Colorado. With the help of 710 volunteers, Protect Our Rivers removed 11,245 lbs of trash from rivers, streams, and nearby beaches. Education: Protect Our Rivers’ cleanup events are opportunities for people to learn about watersheds and ways we can work together to protect them. Protect Our Rivers starts every event with a five-minute overview with updates, top threats, and facts specific to the watershed where the event takes place. Protect Our Rivers also utilizes a watershed demonstration program to educate elementary and middle school aged-kids through partnering with retailers like Patagonia. This watershed model is a tool that kids can participate in to help demonstrate causes and ways to reduce point source and nonpoint source pollution. Finally, distributes important information about river health, river conservation, endangered rivers, and river recreation. Access: Protect Our Rivers creates opportunities that connect people to rivers through recreational experiences and volunteer opportunities. These experiences help change people’s worldview, inspire people to care and empower them to take action to make a difference. When individuals can connect with how pollution affects a stream, or spend some time on a beautiful river as the water flows, people become more inspired to make a difference in caring for our planet.
