Mission Statement

We unite Filipinos in Oregon to build community through programming that addresses and advocates for the needs of marginalized Filipinos living in Oregon - including Filipino workers, new migrants, immigrants, youth, elders, women, LGBTQ+, people of faith, and many more of our kababayan. We serve our community by providing resources, education, and information that will empower Filipinos to make healthy, informed choices, and support one another. We believe that those most impacted by socio-economic injustices should lead in the development of long-term solutions. Using a community organizing framework, we will elevate community stories toward needs-based programs, campaigns, and advocacy. Our center’s aim is to connect community members to essential resources, while building capacity to engage with the issues we face as a community towards change. The work of the Center aims to create a space where Filipinos can find a home amongst each other and create opportunities to connect with, and to advocate for, our motherland and fellow kababayan.

About This Cause

The Filipino Bayanihan Center provides culturally relevant programs and health services. It also helps community members access free and low-cost resources, and connects families to grassroots organizations and advocates. Through a community organizing framework, the following programs aim to provide the tools and resources for Filipinos to develop a common understanding to change the issues we face. Talakayan at Kapehan: Talakayan (Discussion) at Kapehan (and Coffee Time) aims to empower Filipino Americans to advocate for the Filipino community and other vulnerable communities and come together to build an action-oriented support network. The program seeks to connect the intergenerational character and nature of the Filipino Diaspora from school aged children, to university students, new migrants, to professionals, and veterans. Discussions, workshops, or panels are held bi-monthly. The CARE Project: A storytelling and empowerment platform for caregivers and domestic workers in Oregon. Their stories encompass their life in the Philippines, their migration to the US, and their experiences as a worker, shedding light to the sacrifice and impacts of migration and exploitation as OFWs experienced in Oregon. The primary community and participants of this project are Filipino Domestic Workers and aspiring cultural workers through Participatory Action Research methods (PAR). Community-Based Health Program: Led by community health workers and a health liaison team, this program provides wraparound services for Covid positive community members. The team conducts cullturally relevant health outreach especially for undocumented Filipinos, youth and students experiencing mental health issues, LGBTQIA+, and those experiencing food and financial insecurity. The purpose of this project is to work alongside community members to understand the root causes of health disparities and address them collectively. Survey sa Kalusugan (Health Survey): Little information has been collected about the health and health needs of Filipinos in Oregon. This bi-lingual needs assessment survey asks about Covid impacts/education, mental health, common health concerns for new migrants, and social determinants of health including economic security. Answers and data collected guide future programming to serve the needs of the Filipino community and improve health outcomes. Kalusugan Community Pantry: Every day we will be holding a community pantry with perishable and non-perishable goods will be available for pick up from 10am-5pm. This is in partnership with with NAFCON Oregon and other community organizations.
